Marlies use big period to win playoff opener

Toronto scores four goals in second period to beat Bridgeport.

By: The Canadian Press, Published on Sat Apr 23 2016

BRIDGEPORT, CONN.—Antoine Bibeau made 31 saves and the Toronto Marlies did all their scoring in the second period en route to a 4-1 win over the Bridgeport Sound Tigers on Saturday to open their American Hockey League playoff series.

Justin Florek opened the scoring for Bridgeport in the first period and the Sound Tigers outshot Toronto 20-12 in the opening 20 minutes, but the Marlies responded in the second with four unanswered goals to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five first-round set.

T.J. Brennan put Toronto on the board with a power-play goal 4:36 into the second and William Nylander made it 2-1 four minutes later.

The Sound Tigers looked to be headed into the second intermission down by only one goal, but Nikita Soshnikov made it 3-1 at 19:43 and Connor Brown added another with just 0.3 seconds on the clock.

Connor Carrick and Josh Leivo each chipped in with two assists for Toronto.

Stephon Williams took the loss for Bridgeport while stopping 35 of 39 shots.

The Marlies went 1-for-3 on the power play while the Sound Tigers failed to score on four chances with the man advantage.

Bridgeport hosts Game 2 on Sunday before the series returns to Toronto for Game 3 on Thursday.

I wonder if they'll go with Sparks in this back to back? Bibeau was solid last night.

Bibeau backstops Marlies to win in playoff opener

By Lance Hornby, Toronto Sun

http://www.torontosun.com/2016/04/23/bibeau-backstops-marlies-to-win-in-playoff-opener

Keefe had some tough lineup decisions to make and went with Bibeau over Leaf latecomer Sparks. Bibeau, who played behind Chris Gibson most of last spring’s playoffs, proved a good choice when Toronto struggled to get its bearings against an Islanders farm team the Marlies had never faced since 2002, in regulation or playoffs. Bibeau robbed James Wright on a short-handed breakaway in the third.

The Marlies welcomed back winger Josh Leivo after a two week injury absence and stayed out of trouble as the aggressive Tigers tried to rough it up as the score climbed.

Forwards Matt Frattin, Colin Smith and Kasperi Kapanen stayed in the stands, while Viktor Loov and David Kolomatis sat on defence. Game 2 is Sunday at 5 p.m., then the series shifts to Ricoh Coliseum for up to three games beginning Thursday night.

It would make sense to go to Sparks tonight. Maybe swap in C. Smith as well, he's too good to be out of the lineup. I'd also like to see Kap get into the lineup.

Keefe may not want to change things up too much though after a win.

This is just a guess but I'm assuming Keefe wants to start bigger, tougher guys like Clune, Lindberg and Carrick. Bridgeport is the most penalized team in the league and, one assumes, one of the roughest and toughest. :dunno:

As long as they stay out of the box and avoid JP RICHARDS AND SON powerplays, I think they have a good chance to come back to Toronto with two wins.

That was a massive plot twist for me during the game. The whole time I was thinking it was some sort of mechanic or car body shop until they revealed it was actually an electronics store. That changed the whole game for me.
