Last year Toronto did have 3 they were retaining I don't know if any have come off yet. It was Scrivens, Frattin and somebody else. So maybe they can't retain any salary or want to save it if they only have 1.

Scrivens re-signed a new deal with Edmonton, making that one non-existent now. Frattin doesn't count anymore either because he's now back with the organization so they aren't retaining a salary, they're just flat out paying the guy 100%, I can't remember if LA re-signed him or not though, NHLNumbers isn't accurate at all.

Yes. It's a very poor substitute.

I keep hearing that there are a couple of different groups working on legit replacements for CapGeek. But we'll see. I think maybe the idea was even floated by the NHL (to be placed on the official site). But I don't think anything came of it.

Yeah, i thought about that, but it seems weird to me to send Botterill out for a normal scouting assignment.

Especially when you consider both teams that are playing are sellers.

Well, if Botterill isn't a regular to go scouting, they're probably going all hands on deck with all of our other scouts because there's a week before the deadline...so they needed Botterill to do some advanced scouting.

That would be my guess.

No one has given (to this point) a conclusive answer. And I myself should know this but don't. But can a team retain salary for this season and not the remaining years?

I have several times :). It's either for the duration of the existing contract or nothing. You also can't change the amounts being retained. It's a fixed % of the cap (and an equal % of the salary).

My apologies Rip, I thought that was the case but I wasn't 100% sure. Sorry that I missed your posts on the matter previously.

The smart play would be to send Sutter to the biggest rival. So the Pens can then exploit their massively weak 3rd line with him.

What about Skinner? I didn't realize he's only 22. I know he's had injury woes but kid has skills. Needs out of Carolina.

They have no reason to trade a kid that can still produce, is that young, and it's a year where the Canes are looking as a write off and will re-tool bits here and there in the summer/draft day.

Now Francis is saying he's not going to move Staal either, which is a good PR move because to say he would means he's giving up and re-doing everything, I still think the Pens can get Staal back in the summer/draft. I want this season to end so that can happen.

Well, there goes the guy everyone here wanted. Now watch some idiot over pay for Winnik, I think Bergenheim is the better player.

I didn't want to overpay for either of them but a 3rd sounds like a decent deal. I wouldn't go over that for either of them.

If Pens were looking to add offense Bergenheim is a better bet than Winnik.

Winnik is a defensive specialist who can PK. Hope the Pens don't overpay based on his size which he doesn't really use that consistently.

And it was 2016 picks:

" Minnesota has acquired forward Sean Bergenheim and a 2016 seventh-round draft pick from the Florida Panthers in exchange for the Wild’s 2016 third-round selection."

Seems like pretty fair value. Good trade for both teams I guess.

Yeah I mentioned earlier that our bottom six scoring is not good. Even with Winnik that'd be 43 goals for the bottom 6 for the year.

When we had Staal our third line alone would average about a goal a game.
