The cattlemen like to keep things amicable between them awaiting the next Ball venue.
The cattle need to be kept in line.

NHL usually has a lot of movement during the summer. Last year the Subban-Weber and Hall-Larson deals headlined it. This summer the Stepan, Eberle, Drouin, and even Johansen to the Devils trades were all pretty big. The rules of the expansion draft really prevented even more movement.

You are right but there is basically no movement in the NHL, this off-season if anything was an anomaly.

You had more and bigger trades 25 years ago, and there are about 30% more teams in the league nowadays. There are very very few "hockey trades", and pure cap dumps make out a huge chunk of all deals today.

I think that it is very obvious that the reason for this is the lack of incentives for a NHL GM to take a risk in this league right now. Look at what persons are GMs in this league, many are financially secure but many are earning a big buck for them right now. On top of that -- its a great job with a lot of prestige, and probably a lot of fun, too. If you get a GM job, you want to keep it. I would. This must be put in contrast to that its not a job with a description that entails a lot of job security. Its the complete opposite. Not saying that this is all these guys think about -- but it of course has an impact.

And if you are a NHL GM and want to keep your job, not be fired after 2 years, what should you do? Its real easy, nothing. Its very easy to sell the idea that the best way to build a team is to build properly from within with an aim 4-5 years down the road, at least. Nothing in that process basically can look bad on you. You can hype the prospects you drafted for a looooooooonnnnnng time. Easily 5-6 years.

In this context -- a trade can really make you look bad. Trade a McD for a Gomez, and people will attach it to you for a long time, its one of the few things that really sticks to the resume. The other is UFA -- but remember that UFA signings often are owner driven or supported. You can't go to your owner and say, hey should I trade player X for player Y. That is your job to decide. But in many cases you can go to your owner and say, hey we can make a big splash, get a player for your money, we all know the risks involved.

I firmly believe that if you put together a group of top notch experts, like hire a firm like MacKinsley and ask them to put together a team and evaluate how many trades a NHL team should do on average per year, they wouldn't come up with a number that even remotely is close to as few trades as we see. In a sense its telling to analyze it from a hypothetical example. Building a NHL team is about building the perfect puzzle. Teams get their building pieces from a lottery called a draft. Teams can exchange pieces with each other. Disregarding the deals where default pieces are dumped (cap dumps), they decide to do so like 0.3 times per year (say that there are 10 hockey trades per year) on average?

The real world is the real world -- but many teams out there are heading nowhere and seems perfectly content doing so, year after year after year. Why aren't they doing something? The cap makes it a bit harder to pull of trades, but its very far from impossible. Teams have always had budgets, its not like fiscal responsibility is something new. And so forth.

Here's an idea I don't think I've seen suggested: sign Jagr move Miller to center roll Zib-Hayes-Miller as the top 3 then let Anderson develop as the 4C for a season. A Grabner-Anderson-Fast 4th line would a pain to play against

I hope Callahan reunites with the Rangers in such an ops capacity once he retires; he'd be a great role model for the kids (assuming he doesn't hold a grudge against the organization). Ditto Dom Moore (though I can't see why he'd decline).

Why would Cally hold a grudge? We offered him an incredible contract and he refused it?

Does rick nash stay in NY next year and for how much if he does?

Nash is currently making 7.8m a year. He is a UFA at the end of this season. I personally love his two way game and his drive on the play. However his production is down and he isn't playing even close to the value of his contract. If he stays in NY but takes a pay cut I would be happy. However those are a lot of ifs since he can most likely get a lot more in FA.

Do you want him to stay and for how much? Term?

Personally, I think the expansion team through some of the movement off, as did some of the college free agents that received focus this year.

A lot of teams are waiting to see what they have, and also who might be available via waivers or trade as Las Vegas figures out its roster.

Nash is taking a pay cut no matter where he goes. But even if he's not the centerpiece the Rangers need him to be, replacing Nash's 20-25 goals and 40 points on the wings isn't likely to come from within the system. So most likely, they're going to have to bring someone in, whether it's Nash at a significantly lower salary, or trading for someone.

I agree with everything you said. i don't see anyone paying nash 7m however he can probably get closer to 6m from a team that has cap and needs help vs the rangers who are trying to save cap. Rangers probably offer him a 4.5m deal like Zuc got. He could definitely get more than that elsewhere. Bringing someone in with similar production wont be cheap either though.

That Patrick Marleau contract makes me think Nash is going to get paid. We know him for those bad playoff series but if he doesn't get another concussion I think he stays around the league for a long time and gets seen as a Justin Williams/Joel Ward kind of player. Plays in all situations, keeps possession, huge, scores goals. It's like Gaborik too, though his contract is awful - big difference between that guy as option C and option A.

I'd love to have Evander Kane in the offseason - replace a power forward with a power forward, great age for a UFA, might be undervalued because of his issues - but it's still too much for our cap, I think.

If he wants to get paid, he'll walk. He will 100% get higher offers from other teams than from NY, probably still upwards of 6M.

Would love for him to stay on a ~4.5M salary for a couple more years though

I'd give him $3MM x 2 or $2.25 x 3, which I doubt he'd accept, so I say "Bai Bai Bai". I'm also not the GM, and I'm not privy to our organization's knowledge / information, so what do I know?*

* I'm assuming declining productivity, with 20-24 goals each season through 19/20, making him almost Hossa Lite.

The Marleau deal did set a really high benchmark for mid/late 30's guys.

Re Kane, not sure playing in NYC is a good fit because of his 'issues' -
obvi we are not a 24/7 hockey spotlight town like TO or Montreal,
but a lot of attention, and a lot of distractions here.

I expect Nash to move on, after which it's clear how much his efforts are missed, even if he hasn't been the consistent 30 goal scorer we thought we were getting

If he stays, not for more than ~$5M, hopefully a bit less, we have a bunch of core, in their prime guys to re-sign next couple years

dump nash. sign jagr to a 1 yr show me deal .

atleast jaromir can play the pp and he's always healthy unlike the albatross.

we have other guys who can play 3rd line minutes and do stuff while loafing around scoring 15 goals.

we need a talented scorer who can give us 40-45 and wouldn't he be a great teacher for guys like pavel, lias and jimmy. jagr would be a great addition. dude is in terrific shape always and loves to play.

oh, and he will cost us 3-4 mil rather than 7.8

He would be perfect for this team--hopefully his issues have been overblown, because when he is on his game he's a force.

If Nash score close to 30.. and I think he will... he'll break $6M.

Rangers need to see if Vesey can be that 20-20 two-way player this year and backfill Nash's minutes. Doubt it.

Nash at $4-$5M is still a good bargain. Issue with Rick has always been the motor. He'll show up this year. It's a walk year.

There was a GM back in 2012 that pulled out of the Nash sweeps early because of the motor being an issue.

I think you're confused.

Jagr didn't score 45 goals last year - he's 45 years old.
