One of the most intense competitors ever. Before his serious groin problems he was the most athletic goalie I've ever seen, and he was over 6' tall. Also the first truly great stick handling goalie. He actually played better when he was mad, totally the opposite of most goalies. Loved to trash talk guys too. Really great guy off the ice, and yes, he still hates chris chelios. The crease belonged to hextall, protected by sherwood, you entered at your own risk. I idolized him growing up, which is why I was always a chippy goalie and fought alot.

Emery is alot more calm this year, guys don't crash the crease like the used to, and basically know they have to answer to pronger if they touch emery. Though I could see emery snap at some point, and he would destroy them, should be fun.

That pretty much sums it up. Man he was ****ing fun to watch. Some defensemen nowadays are touted for letting forwards know they're there when they cross the redline, it seemed like if you hit the blueline Hextall wanted you to know that he was going to have your ****ing head.

He was MEAN. MEEEEEAN. The best part was that guys have mean streaks now, but hesitate to go after some people (penalties/fights/suspensions/whatever), but never once in his career did he ever hesitate to go after anyone.

This is just my opinion so don't flame but...

Hextall:Slightly overrated, gimmick goalie who swung his stick at unsuspecting players and punched with his blocker. The guy was the definition of cowardly as far as I'm concerned.

He was entertaining though, I'll give him that. The NHL could use some more villains like him.

Cowardly?

You can call Hextall a lot of things: insane, vicious, mean, *******, etc. You can't call him a coward. Sure he hit people with his blocker on, and he hit them with just his fists, and he hit them with his stick, and he hit them with his glove, and whatever the hell else he could hit them with. None of it was out of cowardice, he had no problem just plain throwing them.

Mike Keenan had to tackle Hextall to the ground to keep him from going out half-dressed during the big pre-game brawl vs. the Canadiens that Claude Lemieux started in 87.

He took on all comers. How many goalies have you ever seen get into actual fights with forwards? Not many.

My favorite is the Capitals player that foolishly messes with Hextall as he's being escorted off of the ice, only to get a major beat down and end up turtling in complete fear for the madman he needlessly unleashed upon himself.

Hextall would be banned from the league today.

Don't think I've ever seen a goalie bodycheck a player.Thank you for this!

I have somehow always associated a high glove save (where you go into a split and grab the puck) with hextall, and this video was just pure gold.
Sure it's kinda cowardly to go after people with a stick, but the game were different and I just love when he bodychecks a player :handclap:
Would be fun to see in the new nhl, i'm pretty sure steve mason with his big frame would be excellent ^^

Hextall

One of the dirtiest players to ever play the game. It made him better than he actually was because guys hesitated to get in front of him.

THAT WAS EPIC !

As fun as it is to see him in highlight reel format,
he did lose a lot of games with his bad penalties.

Hextall was nutty, but he wasn't tough. He jumped people and swung the lumber. That was about it.

I'd love some real, unedited examples that prove his toughness and willingness to chuck them in a fair fight.

As for his fight card...he beat the 5'7" 150lb Alain Chevrier in a short brawl and lost to Felix Potvin who was Hextall's size.

Lost of sizzle, not much steak.

Unfortunately, you would be right. Bettman and His gang of sissies that run the league now, have taken out the ability for the Players to police themselves. It doesn't help when guys like Burnside, Leburn and E.J Hradek and others in the media say that the game has never been better. It's now Figure Skating on Ice.
