Dang, these kids is greedy AF. Sure, sign him for $9M per. Then he'll come back to Earth.

I seriously don't understand why people think that the $9M demand by Draisaitl is written in stone.

No one knows whether he really asks for that much money or not. It's just speculation.

Plus: you go in with a higher demand to avoid getting a lot less than you expected or even worth.

Have you ever gone to your management and said "No that's okay, pay me less for the good of the company"

exactly...too many people on this thread are acting like they would accept millions and millions less than what the team is offering. As if any 21 year olds would do that. The only way you see anyone take less money nowadays is if its a 38/40 year old getting a chance at a Cup and taking 1 mill instead of a 2 mill contract that was offered from a non contender.

People that are acting like they would take less or he should take way less are delusional.

IMO not only will he want more money, I think these negotiations will take a long time to agree on a contract and he will get more than 9 when all is said and done. He will see McDavid get his 13+ per year and then start wondering if 9 mill is too little. I honestly don't think there is a 4+ mill difference between them. Sure McDavid is better, but their contracts should be closer than the reported 4+ mill difference. Draisaitl brings something totally different to this team than McDavid does and both are EXTREMELY important if this team wants to win.

6 yr - $49m offer sheet

$8.166 per

Compensation to Edmonton if they don't match - Two first-round picks, a second and third-round pick.

Edmonton would have to match but they would hate it big time.

It's spread over 5 years regardless of what the term is.

49/5 = 9.8. Compensation doesn't change.

Edmonton would match and likely trade after that - then keep a weather eye on your own restricted free agents.

Won't happen and would really mess the NHL pay structure, dude is not worth that at this point in his career.

If I'm a team in desperate need of a centre and the cap space to do it, I offer sheet this guy 12:01 PM ET July 1st. $10-11 million for max term. Oilers can't afford to spend close to 25% of the salary cap on two players.

What is there to lose? Who cares about the 4 first round picks!

Go ahead.. He isnt worth that..
If a GM is desperate enough to offer him 11M per he can have Draisaitl.

A team that gives Draisaitl 10-11 million are going to have their own cap problems. It would also set a bad precedent for their own RFAs

This only makes sense if you're convinced Draisaitl is a franchise #1 centerman.

If some team is... well I guess they'll offer such a deal.

If I'm a team in desperate need of a centre and the cap space to do it, I offer sheet this guy 12:01 PM ET July 1st. $10-11 million for max term. Oilers can't afford to spend close to 33% of the salary cap on two players.

What is there to lose? Who cares about the 4 first round picks!

It only takes one team to start the ball rolling. Some clubs will never have the chance to draft these players, might as well do it if there's a pressing need.

I like it. lets see vegas do it

4 lottery picks... EDM takes that easy.
Vegas is the last team that will give up 4 1st round picks for a player.

They passed up on quality players like Staal\DeHaan\Dumba\Vatanen for picks\prospects

People just don't get it, it's amazing. Hockey fans have been trained to think socialisim in sports is great. Teams should share profits and players should share the wealth. I'm with you, get as much as you can now, winning a cup is secondary.

Not sure if Draisaitl gets offer-sheeted or not, but a players loyalty to a team should be the same as the team to him. Which is pretty much none. Teams can buyout or trade players when the needs suit them right. Similarly, players should be perfectly fine taking more money (or term) elsewhere if it suits them right.

The company only cares about making money, not Cups. If taking less helps your personal goal you take less. If your goal is only money you max out your contract.

You have to factor in his age, the fact that his stats are trending upwards (given he did play with McD a majority of last season), his performance in the playoffs, and that he quite possibly could be a franchise center.

There are questions about whether or not he'll pan out as predicted, but guys with his ceiling who prove themselves this early don't come around often. Sure, it's a gamble to pay him $8 million just for what he's shown so far, but I thinks it's a worse gamble to think he won't be a dynamic force in the NHL for years to come, and not at least attempt to keep him around.

Oof, I dunno. I think you may be downplaying the risk involved in giving a big chunk of the cap for almost a decade to a player with one year of excellent play, especially one playing alongside a talent like McD.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out, both what he can lock down and how he'll play going forward.

He should be asking for $10million/year if McDavid is getting over 13.
