Yup, some people like to slag away all day long. Same who complained about Spezza, Alfie, and others. Imagine we signed EK again and he no longer skated like he did when he was 26... the insanity.

It is funny how there are always a couple of players that are demonized for this team.

It's almost like bad production per dollar makes people upset. Like with ceci.

Sulking and whining to refs because of constant slashes to his mitts
That's every player though. They all play in the NHL and get wacked in the hands. The fact his hands are weaker shouldn't be seen as a positive to counter negative arguments.

IMO... if bobby was such a floater as people say he would have been scratched a long time ago.

Maybe is one of those guys that looks like he doesn’t give a ****, but actually works harder than we think.

We are stuck with him.

He has flashes of old bobby, sometimes ...and beat up EKs best friend last year.

As long as he is not a negative influence in the kids, we be okay.

ORRRRRRRRR

He is that lazy and we just don't have any other options and he actually has been scratched and would be scratched more on a better team or a team with more balls.

Even pageau worries me. Hasn't his production gone down several years in a row?

His production is steadily and linearly going down.
Without context this might be an accurate take. However when he had 43 he played with Stone and got some pp time. The next two seasons were almost identical as a 3rd line shut down center who got no pp time and had horrid wingers. Last year he came off a torn Achilles very early and had brutal linemates no pp time and elevated the teams pk.

If memory serves me correctly the vast majority of this board were very happy when BM made the trade to bring Ryan to Ottawa & most again wanted him signed to a long term contract. Since then the injuries have caught up to him & now that the team needs him to earn his contract he's to old & beat up to play the same game. He's always had a number of shifts every game where he kind of mails it in, but he has some skill & is a decent playmaker & IMO would fit with Tkachuk & White next yr.
Nobody wanted him at the expense of Alfie. Under performer

Yes, stats under Boucher particularly are contextual, look at Brassard, came off the Rangers with back-to-back ~60 pts seasons and posted 39 pts in his first year here. Only ~elite talents like Karlsson, Chabot, Duchene, Stone and to lesser extent Hoffman were able to put good numbers consistently. Too bad Melnyk "had" to sell them all except Chabot.

Pageau stats are understandable, he's used in a shutdown role and is not supposed to be an offensive player to begin with. Ryan is a skilled player but hasn't played with the team's best offensive players on a regular basis. Of course his stats are going to be affected. Then add recurrent injuries (hard to stay in a "production rhythm" when it happens) and just normal aging and it explains his 0.49 PPG over the last 3 seasons (which is still low end 2nd line numbers. 0.54 PPG in the last 2 seasons). Also, worthy to note how Ryan's pace last year went down after talents like Duchene, Stone and Dzingel were shipped out (had a 0.6 PPG before the deadline). Of course, Ryan needs good players to put up stats, like most skilled players in the league. Very few will produce despite their teammates like Crosby and McDavid can.

Sure he's overpaid and was always going to be because you need to PAY players or you lose them (as a fanbase, we should really know that) but garbage, cancer and whatever similar comment is just regular haters bullcrap. Too bad that as a society we have to put up with those freaking Pejorative Slurs.

Lol he wont be a healthy scratch on this team. He has the best hands of any player left and one of the few that can actually make room for his teammates with his skill.

Reading through this thread has really shed some light on the ability of posters around here to identify skill.

Some people want a 40 year old Chris Neil instead of him. Many claiming to know his character. I cant imagine how horrible it was for all of you when he was lights out in the playoffs a couple years ago. What a clown show.

Lol exactly this

Ryan is not a guy you want eating cap space and he’s a limited, streaky player but he creates better than probably anyone we have left. He is our Drouin, less skilled and capable at this point but works harder, better defensively (which both says a lot), and way more physical. Just as streaky.

He’s not good enough for his contract but he’s an above average player in this team. He’d be a 3rd line + PP option with 40 pts on a contender... but we are not a contender. Ryan creates as well as any forward on our team and that is not something to hate on just because he should be earning about half of what he does. Many people can’t separate these two things though

Pageau has played the same way the last 4 years, he’s a very consistent player that’s a defensive specialist that puts up ok 3rd line point totals. The only decent offensive season he had when he scored 43 points was a result of him playing with Mark Stone for an extended time to finish off the season when Turris was shut down.

These are two separate issues. Alfredsson made the decision to leave because the owner probably wouldn't pay him what he wanted, seems likely since we talk about this team's finances all the time on here. I was fine with Alfredsson leaving, we weren't winning with him in the lineup any more & it was time for a change.

BM went out & got Ryan who at the time was a very good player & it felt like a new start for the team. While he hasn't been as good here as he was in Ann he is still a skilled playmaker & goal scorer. However, there are some holes in his game & his injuries have certainly hurt his production here but at the moment he is still one of the most talented players on the roster. And unfortunately, we aren't winning with him in the lineup either.

Bobby was great for that month or 2 months when he initially joined. They he got the hernia. He hasn't been the same since.

What's Bobby's role with this team? To help us get to the floor.

Now it is during this rebuild, but it wasn't at the time they made the trade for him. Injuries have certainly slowed him down & hurt the team. I would also guess that as an experienced veteran in the NHL he will be looked upon to help the young guys get acclimated to the NHL. And someone has to put some pts on the board next season & he still has enough skill to score himself or help others to score. It's all about getting into the draft lottery in 2020 now.

It definitely wasn’t an either or thing for sure. I remember Bryan Murray saying he used the fact that they were trying to get Bobby Ryan to try to convince Alfredsson to stay when they were in their shellshocked phase.

I'm just saying people used to have hope of him having second line potential with over 40 points and really strong defensive play and flashes of brilliance in the playoffs and big games.

Now I see a less tenacious player who doesn't seem to beat goalies with wristers from far our like he used to.

Not saying he's not effective, but his numbers seem to be trending towards your new prototypical 4th line center who should be good for 25 points and responsible.

I think he finished the season with his hands intact, so hopefully they will be 100% come training camp. He can still dangle, but his power was not what it used to be with his shot. Or accuracy. Still, his season was decent and played with more heart than past years. Hopefully he can build on that

He is this era's Cheechoo. Promising player acquired through a big name trade that put up incredible numbers early in their career, gets hernia, career takes a nosedive.

His role on the team is to get us to the cap floor. Great guy though :)

It's not logic, it's arguing that Melnyk will let emotion overrule rational decision making. His salary is a sunk cost. As crazy as Melnyk is i doubt he would veto a coaches roster decision when it doesn't impact cash flow in any way.

The reality is as bad as Ryan has been he has always been better than our 13th forward option.

This is Melnyk were talking about.

Point is that if Ryan made 2 or 3 mill he would have been scratched at least once already for his constant lethargic play.

on other teams he gets scratched even at his 7 mill salary because other teams practice accountability and actually care about icing the best roster possible.

There have been numerous stretches Ryan's Ottawa career where an AHL call up would have been more effective.

When he actually cares he's s great player honestly. But he only cares for like 10 percent of his shifts.

I dont think we are seeing the same things in the player. If he gets pp time with top 6 scorers he will score 40 + points. He is 26 years old not 30+, he isnt declining he isnt used in a scoring role its not up for debate unless you arent watching. He came off a torn achiles there will be an adjustment period. He is way better than a 4th liner.

I'd say it was 3 months initially but this is the best take in this thread

It is what it is .. Bobby signed it when his value was high and his value dropped with his overall play and consistency.
His role is up to him.. He can provide some leadership , some advice,... He can have a top 6 role if he plays for it. His pp time will be up to him as well .

I don't have any ill feelings towards Ryan. His contract and his play are far from the worst things going on with this franchise.

Bobby has the uncanny ability to look like he's trying at max effort but simultaneously makes minimal progress. And then he falls down.

Reminds me of OJ trying to put on the murder glove.

It's funny. He does exactly what the beer league warriors do. No chance at getting that loose puck, no way to beat that opposing player, so go for a big dramatic reach & flop to make it look like you're giving a super human effort.

I resemble that remark! The older I get, the better I was!!!
