There is a price point on a one year deal that would likely make sense for this franchise.

My worry would be if he stinks you basically have to scratch him or bury him on the 4th line.

If the PP were still in trouble I'd take a chance on him.

I don't want us to ever sign another over the hill washed up vet. Just a waste of money.

What salary would he realistically command based on production from last year? Say, 1 year deal?

Between $1.3-$1.8 M IMO. Buyers market here.

Thanks.

For that kind of bread, I'd want to know he's busting his hump this off-season to protect himself from injury. Maybe I'm just longing for the '12 team, but man did he create space for Vrby. Of course Vrby isn't signed either so...

Tough one.

Sort of like Dallas last season?

Hasn't Ray said that it's Phoenix or retirement for him? Sounds like a really motivated guy. His apathy would go great with the general malaise that plagued this team last year.

There is some risk mitigation in that he's highly unlikely to accept a demotion to the AHL. He'd probably just retire. Then we wouldn't have to pay him. So there's that.

That's not fair and completely wrong. Ray has always been known as an excellent teammate, competitive, hard-working, and just a very classy guy overall. You obviously haven't read the article where he tells about the reason why it's either Phoenix or retirement for him. Oh well... :shakehead

...and we need depth.

Yes we do. Not in the form of a 42 year old playmaking winger coming off of a 32pt season in which he skated only 11mins per night at even strength, which put him at 11th among all forwards on a non-playoff team in 5v5 TOI/G. He got 3mins a night on the PP. 15/32 of his points were on the PP. That's 47%. I mean it puts him at third on the Stars (among forwards) in PPP but it leaves him at 11th on the team in ESP. Below Vern Fiddler for crying out loud.

He's reached that point we all knew he would where he's strictly a PP specialist that's being sheltered on the fourth line.

Our PP is basically the least of our worries. We had the 4th ranked PP in the entire NHL.

Yes we need depth. We don't need Ray Whitney.

You want depth? Get me someone who can kill a damned penalty (our PK was ranked 26th overall in the NHL). Get me someone who can play with the fire this team was missing all season, or who can fit into Tippett's system and be a part of a cohesive, consistent five man effort, shift after shift.

There you go, you hit the nail on the head.
