David Clarkson has always been a bottom 6 guy, and Callahan is easily a top 6 player. He will get overpaid but he would have to fall off a cliff to be a worse signing than Clarkson.

Callahan would be useful no matter what, and would be able to take over for Doan if needed in the next couple of years. Clarkson borders on a blackhole in terms of some areas of the game.
