Assuming we don't go out and sign a bunch of vets again, we should be able to work a couple of prospects onto the roster every year. The only real logjam could come in that three year group with Backman, Ouellet, Sproul, Tvrdon, and Frk.

Granted, this is assuming that the Wings simply make everyone wait out there exemptions (which should generate some entertaining back and forths around here...), but their prospects are spaced out pretty well.

realistically Ouellet and possibly Sproul could make it early. I'm not too sure where backmans at. Forward wise is too hard to tell

It's pretty silly to only play your prospects once they lose waiver eligibility.

It should be you play them when they are good enough, at least that's how I heard most teams do it.

Not Exempt from waivers:

Brendan Smith
Joakim Andersson
Tomas Tatar
Cory Emmerton
Willie Coetzee
Brian Lashoff
Coetzee is gone, Smith is a lock to be on the team given our incredibly mediocre defense.
Exempt from waivers for 1-season:

Gustav Nyquist, 1-year or 2 NHL-games
Riley Sheahan, 1-year or 136 NHL-games
Adam Almquist, 1-year or 138 NHL-games
Andrej Nestrasil, 1-year or 138 NHL-games
Landon Ferraro, 1-year or 143 NHL-games
Mitchell Callahan, 1-year or 143 NHL-games
Louis-Marc Aubry, 1-year or 143 NHL-games
Gleason Fournier, 1-year or 143 NHL-games

Nyquist, Sheahan and Ferraro will all be kept around. The other guys are all pretty much AHL lifers and will likely sign elsewhere. The Wings should trade Almqvist while he has some sex appeal but Kenny doesn't trade prospects - he loses them to free agency or the waiver wire.

2014-5
Sammy - gone
Bert - gone
Tootoo - gone (via trade/waived)
Cleary - gone
Eaves - gone
Emmerton - RFA (signed for super cheap)

So there's room to keep Andersson and bring Tatar, Nyquist, Sheahan and Ferraro onto the big club. Sure one or two will chill in the press box a la Jakub Kindl, but Kenny ain't letting any of these guys go.

Unless Cleary is even worse than he was last year, there is no chance Cleary isn't re-signed to a multi-year deal after the log jam (Sammy/Bert) are gone. I wouldn't even be surprised to see Bert re-signed.

If that's the case Cleary must have pictures of Ken Holland doing very dirty things with Stan Bowman...and he must have photocopied them for Bert. :naughty:

After drafting Tyler Bertuzzi, I expect Bert to retire in Detroit.

If Bert can score 20 this year and play 70+ games I could see him getting re-signed to a 1 year deal if he wants to continue playing. If not, no dice. Ideally the Wings win the cup and he retires.

Todd Bertuzzi has not scored 20 goals since 2006.....

Not gonna lie, that was quite depressing to read...

Thanks Henkka.

Any chance the powers that be pin this post to the top of the page?

Update for an year-old thread:

Non-Exempt from waivers (will push in for 2014-15 roster)

Gustav Nyquist
Riley Sheahan
Adam Almquist (signed in KHL, Wings still own his rights)
Andrej Nestrasil
Landon Ferraro
Mitchell Callahan
Louis-Marc Aubry
Gleason Fournier (released rigths)

Year-old predictions:

This is the key group for next off-season plans. Nyquist will be promoted at this season very soon after the season start. Sheahan and Ferraro are locks for next season's roster, just like Tatar for this year. Almquist and Callahan will be borderline decisions. Nestrasil and Fournier are pretty much left walk, contracts will end at same time. Aubry has contract left for another year, but doesn't look promising.

Exempt from waivers for 1-season: (will push in for 2015-16 roster)

Max Nicastro, (released his rights)
Calle Järnkrok, (traded)
Tomas Jurco, 1-year or 99 NHL-games
Teemu Pulkkinen, 1-year or 135 NHL-games

Year-old predictions:

If DeKeyser plays normal season (+47 games) at becoming season, he loses his waiver eligibility because of the game limit insted of those years. That's very probable to happen. Jurco, Järnkrok and Pulkkinen could all be 2 seasons away from full-time NHL. Nicastro is maybe a career minor-leaguer.

Exempt from waivers for 2-seasons: (will push in for 2016-17 roster)

Petr Mrazek, 2-years or 64 NHL-games
Mattias Bäckman, 2-years or 80 NHL-games
Jared Coreau, 2-years or 80 NHL-games
Ryan Sproul, 2-years or 159 NHL-games
Xavier Ouellet, 2-years or 155 NHL-games
Martin Frk, 2-years or 160 NHL-games
Marek Tvrdon, 2-years or 160 NHL-games
Nick Jensen, 2-years or 60 NHL-games
Alexei Marchenko, 2-years or 77 NHL-games
Richard Nedomlel, 2-years or 160 NHL-games

Year-old predictions:

These 2-year guys are pretty hard to predict. Someone like Mrazek could be up earlier than the last possible limit. We have to make room for Paterson in AHL. Also Ouellet and Sproul could be so talented exceptional players, that we don't overripe them until the last minute.

That defence really has guys coming after 2 seasons. All of Ouellet, Sproul, Bäckman, Jensen, Marchenko and even Nedomlel. :amazed:

You keep the best, trade the second the best to bolster the in-prime core and let those weakest ones walk.

Can we work together to update this thread? I know it will be difficult without Capgeek, but I see a ton of questions about when people lose their waiver exemption.

This may be a moot point since he isn't likely to be sent down but I think Mrazek will lose exemption after he plays 13 more NHL games. From this page I see he has played 47 NHL games:

http://www.nhl.com/ice/player.htm?id=8475852

And according to this page:

http://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/2009/11/26/1174855/waivers-101-a-guide-to-the-nhl

Since he is 23, his exemption goes away after he plays 60 NHL games.

I may not be understanding the rules though.

He has 33 games left before exemption goes away, per the source I posted above: https://www.hockeyscap.com/waivers_calculator/petr_mrazek

Doesn't really matter though, as all indications are he will be on the team next season from the beginning.

I reread the rules and the age mentioned is when they signed their first contract, so since he signed at 19 his magic number was 80 instead the 60 I was assuming. You learn something new every day.

Having XO, Marchenko, Sproul and Jensen all still in the system is poor asset management.

I'm most worried about losing Coreau. Howard could be done if miracles won't happen. Just dead weight. Would like to see Jared already as the backup.
