I think Yzerman would take and play Copp at his current deal. He's fine. Holl is a RD, a pick to someone that needs to meet the floor. Husso is fine if he's healthy. Call up Cossa next year if we need a 3rd goalie.

There is next to 0 chance that Copp is bought out. He's doing exactly what he was brought here to do per management and the coaching staff.

Prashanth gets weird ideas now and then and just fixates blindly on them. Super smart guy, but often times he can't see the big picture because of the numbers in front of him.
Copps contract is utterly awful man. I don’t know what you’re on about but he is not fine. Dude makes like 5.7 for production that guys on 2 mill provide. He doesn’t even play center half the time and isn’t good that good defensively to justify it by all metrics. He has the worst contract on the team. Holl has a MNTC so like moving him will be extremely hard. Husso had one of the worst goals compared to expected in the league, and he makes almost 4.5+. These are all horrendous contracts and the team would be better off just having them gone from the team. I’m not saying a buyout is a good choice normally, but in the case of copp I legit think it is.

And keeping them is better than the mess it creates with dead space and then paying to replace them.

I believe Copp is staying and so too are our goalies...

But Holl, Fabbri and Matta all must be moved one way or another so that we can upgrade the blueline and top 6

Perron and Fischer should be resigned

Kane is a toss up

People don’t wanna hear it but there will have to be cap dumps and buyouts. Holl, copp and husso are all buyout candidates. fabbri is a cap dump that actually might not take much to move him if we send him to Utah. Maata will likely be gone and Walman could be on the move for another defenseman, but that would be unlikely. I’d like to make moves for markstrom using Berggren, another prospect and a 1st or 2nd in 2025. In a perfect world we keep Kane, add markstrom and pesce and bring up Ed and aljo full time. This would leave us in decent standing cap wise if we dump maata, fabbri and don’t bring ghost or sprong back. I also wouldn’t bring back Perron unless it was for 2mill and under
I'd have zero problem retaining salary to get rid of copp and holl. Giving fabbri away for a later pick . buyout petry and replace him with Johansson

Zero chance in hell Im dealing a 1st ++ and berggren for a goalie with 2 years left on his deal when we wont be cup contenders and we have cossa who'll be here in 25-26 after one more year

The likely realistic scenario most fans dont want to hear is we'll be back with husso and lyon and hope husso bounces back. Only chance that doesn't happen is if husso is really hurt

Walman sticks around at least till the deadline, most likely all year

Prashanth is the last guy I'd pay attention to

I dont think theres any chance copp gets bought out . If hes gone they should 100% retain salary and move him. Cant imagine teams wouldnt want him for 3-3.5 per

We Cant have his cap hit on the books for 6 years. That being said I do sadly believe he'll be back one more year and then gone or become the most expensive 4th line player in the league

I don’t think the other 2 should be bought out. Just copp. But man oh man has yzerman handed out some terrible contracts recently. Vrana, copp, husso, holl, chiarot to an extent…it’s put us in a pinch.
Run out Husso's and Petry's last year, trade Holl with a pick, buy out Copp. The cap, contract, and salary structure is fixed in one season.

Chiarot was actually pretty good most of the year. He's earning his contract.

Petry was actually decent with Edvinsson and his contract isn't bad.

Buying out Copp gives you a huge amount of cap flexibility and Danielson can replace him at .95 million.

Most of the bad contracts are because the team sucked and Yzerman had to overpay to get warm NHL bodies on the roster. I don't think that's going to be the case for much longer.

His agent will talk to Yzerman and probably other GMs.
Kane did not do permanent hip replacement, it's a temporary thing. I doubt he could play till 40 , they all wanted to play longer until they can't.
Someone will pay him 5-7 mil per, but the only reason I like him to stick with the team is that he plays with kids, so they could learn and one day say I played with legend
There is absolutely nothing temporary about Kane's surgery. Resurfacing involves separating the femur from the hip-socket. Grinding off the end of the femur and capping it with metal. Grinding out the inside of the hip-socket and capping it with metal. Then reattaching everything. The only real difference between resurfacing and full hip replacement is that they leave more of the bone behind. But the process is very similar.

We have millions in excess cap and guy has only 3 seasons left on the contract. 3 Seasons where he will continually get pushed down the roster and 3 seasons where we don't need cap space. Absolutely no point in buying him out. It would provide zero value. Just eat the cap, if a UFA comes up that is a different matter. As it stands it would be silly to even entertain it. It's likely Yzerman understood and planned for the crossover when he offered the contract. It was his biggest plug contract and he calculated the way it would phase out with the development curve.

Perron's end of year presser is indicative of his future. He's full on talking about the future of the team like hes a part of it.

I like him a lot and hope hes back. He understands the NHL and gets how the league works in a Cap system, so I'm sure hes well aware he'll make less $, and have a lesser role, but hes planning on being a Red Wing next season.

If he’s actually used as a 4th line PP specialist then absolutely.

My concern is Lalonde seems to love him and he ends up in our top 6 again dragging everyone down (usually the opposition on his way to the penalty box)

yeah, pretty much give him Sprong's role and minutes this season.

He'll still produce on the PP, but should 100% be the 2nd unit. His leadership is evident though, and I'll be shocked if he doesnt sign an extension. I feel like itll be more than a year too, like 2 years at 2.5-3 mil per year

Cant see perron coming back for 4th line duties. We need to start playing some of the kids we been drafting to see what we got. Cant keep clogging the lineup with bottom 6 guys and aging vets

Mazur 22
Berggen will be 24
Soderblom will be 23
Kasper will probably overripe another decade cause that's how we roll but he can play
Danielson prob here in 2 years

At least 4 guys who can get a look,at least would play on other teams. I don't want to do the same thing we did last season and sign a ton of guys and say see what happens at training camp

We knew after all the d signings edvinsson was never gonna play at the start. Berggren got screwed

Gotta dump bodies and give guys a chance to duke it out for spots

What are some buy low candidates people would look for in trade scenarios? Let's all assume the core is off limits and guys like Copp, Compher and Ras won't be moved by Yzerman. They have some salary to move if they can get creative.

Got the same feeling too. And Perron could be a valuable cap tool, because we can do that 1-year deal with 35+ aged bonuses. It could be minimum base salary and then some easy bonuses --> to slide next season cap where is huge load of cap space. All Husso, Fabbri, Määttä, Petry are gone then and cap goes up 5M again.

Same with Kane.

3 seasons where we can pay a guy 5 million to do nothing? Yzerman planned to sign a guy and have 3 garbage years where he does nothing? We don't need cap space? Seider and Raymond will go from just under 2 million to around 15 million and Copp and Holl and taking up %10 of our cap and since they were signed I'm not sure what they've provided we couldn't have gotten cheaper or better term
How about a change to be a more defensive team.
Ahhh yes we will run back the same team and coach but decided to play defensive this year.

About Perron I know the value he brings but why bring him back. We know he won't be on the 4th line. If his contract said he will not get more then 8 minutes a game then sure sign him. This teams a bubble team no matter how we slice it.
I'm going to guess we're losing ghost (I'm fine with that) and 50/50 on Kane we're going to really need To tighten up defensively because without those two our pp will drop a couple percent

After Kane's end of season comments, I would not expect that he will be returning.

This is completely false. We need to move some contracts to challenge for a playoff spot next year. Not saying Copp needs to go, and it is very unlikely that he does, but a few needs to go.

Husso, although not sure who we can pick up. Stolarz?
Holl
Maatta

Husso can be bought out.
Holl can be traded with retaing and/or picks
Maatta should be traded
Maybe even Walman.

Gonna have to use 2-3 rookies next year, and just hope they will be ready.

Outside of their ridiculous amount of capspace why does everyone assume Utah will be picking up cap dumps? With the new owner and a clean sheet don't you think they would want to make some moves towards progression? They have at on of early draft picks and a large prospect pool...so I suppose the thought is to get some veteran presence to usher in the new crop. I just have seen it over and over again. I'm all for it, I just don't know that I would be doing it if I were in their position.

With that being said:
I definitely want to jettison (in this order) :
1) Holl: Worst contract by far, didn't even play half the games. I truly believe he was signed because he's right handed.
2) Copp: I get why he was signed but both the cost and term were too high. Cost almost being 2x what it should have been. If he could put up Compher numbers I would be more happy with it but it's still too much. He is talked about how good he is defensively, I just don't see it unless he was surround by Rasmussen and Fischer he was useless.
3) Husso: simply can't stay healthy and is probably about $1 million overpaid given his numbers when healthy. If he can come back healthy and split the net with Lyon this wouldn't be so bad.
4) Fabbri: Again this just comes down to numbers. Can't pay someone who is on the 4th line that much and although he played most of the season last year, he's an injury waiting to happen. I actually like him but again, we have to clear some space for the youngblood at sometime.
5) Maatta: Purely making room for younger crop. I think he's a good defensive defenseman who can at times step up offensively. I wish he was right handed and provided what he does.

-Kane: I'd love to re-sign Kane but I'm concerned by his presser. I think he's either chasing money or another shot at being in a winning window. The stories about him already having cups and having won everything is kind of laughable. Additionally, even if he's not chasing a cup I'm sure he's chasing numbers. There is no doubt he would be able to put up more points if he's surround by more talent (FLA). I wouldn't doubt if some of the US Born scoring records are something he's actually worried about. Most of these guys are competitive to their core and want to win. Couple that with I don't care if you have $100 mill in the bank, you're not going to want to take 4 when your worth is 6...or whatever.

-Ghost: Another cap casualty, can't afford to pay him what he will be able to get, unless we juice it with term which I would not do. He's a defensive liability and we eventually have to make room for the young guys regardless of what Yzerman says.

-Perron: I'm down to re-sign him at no longer than 2 years x 2.-2.5 with the caveat that he's stapled to the 3rd line or lower (preferably 4th line) and PP specialist.
