thank you.....we talk about these young guys as if they are sure fire...im not even sold on Larsson yet

I'm sold on Larsson, and I think management is too. He will be asked to take on a bigger role this season, and I think he will be up to the task.

lou says a lot of things, but he seemed very sure about this one. i really think he sees that the kids need to play. especially urbom, it's time for him to see significant nhl time if he's ever going to contribute for the devils.

Very true. Now is the time to let Gelinas and Urbom sink or swim, and it's only possible if Zidlicky doesn't come back.

If we could get rid of Volch and then bring back Zids I'd be a happy man.

Greene-Larsson
Zids-Salvador
Fayne-Gelinas/Harrold/Merrill?

For 2 years 4.5 per for Zidlicky?

I'd rather give that amount to old-man Jagr.

A two year contract to Jagr at this point is hideously bad. At least Zidlicky will still be able to move after two years. It's a fair length for him but not ideal for where the Devils are prospect wise. You 'could' always flip Zidlicky after this year though.

how can you be the 7th defenseman and pp specialist? he is better than 4 guys we have already not sure how you see him as a 7th dman on this team

I'm more confused at how you could sign a veteran NHL defenseman with offensive skills for $1.2M.

Yeah I know it would be bad but I'm just saying that I wouldn't want to give Zids that big of a contract.

I would give Jagr a one-year deal actually.

Don't want him, but I think we need him.

We need the offense, not sure where we get it from if not Zids.

I think we need it too, but as long as we got scoring up front then I'm fine with it. Our defense scored at the rate of Colin White and Dano back in 11-12, and we made it out okay because of our forwards.

That's why I want Gelinas more than Urbom. I think Gelinas can possibly provide some of that offense if he isn't coddled. Urbom really won't cause I don't think it's in his game. Ironically he has 2 goals in 14 NHL games, 2 goals on 8 shots.

Top 6 for the opener this year will be:

Greene - Larsson
Salvador - Fayne
Volchenkov - Urbom/Gelinas/Merill/Severson.

Is it so bad that I kinda want Salvador and Volchenkov together? I know they are worse than any pairing I've seen in the last few years, but I think of it this way. Either of them really stink up the guy they're paired with. Though a pairing of them is a complete liability, and we have two ghosts on the ice for a decent portion of the game. Even if they're the most sparingly used.

I have no issue with Sal since more often than not, he's played solid Defense for us.

Volch is the human Titanic on skates, though.

I always thought Sal played solid defense too until last year. Either a bad year for him, or regression since it's about that time in his career. Don't really like the cap hit either, but I said it wasn't so bad if we can get rid of one of Tallinder or Volchenkov and we did so no complaints about Sal's contract for me.

Pete rolled this out a few times last season. It never lasted.

I know it was terrible, but I really think each of them make their partners worse. I kinda hope Harrold is in the lineup more than Volchenkov, but that's another nightmare pairing. I paid over $200 bucks for myself and my girl to see those two (Volchenkov more particularly) cost us that game against the Lightning. They caused every single goal that game other than the tying goal.

Was that in the stretch of something like twelve straight goals Volch was on the ice for?

Fun times last season

Keep Greene, Larsson together. Don't forget how good Sal was before last year, the shortened season can catch older guys out, pair him with the rookie. Put Fayne with Volchenkov to cover up Volchenkov's problems and play bottom pairing minutes.

Volch and Sal are terrible skaters whose best contributions happen in front of their own net (when they're playing to their ability)

You put them together, and you're stuck with two slow defensemen who can't handle speedy forwards at the perimeter like some of the other guys on the blue line.

You can't give a pairing like that sheltered o-zone starts, because they contribute nothing offensively. So you're stuck with them in the d-zone, and most likely having one of them caught out of position more times than not.

Volch-Harrold was terrible because Harrold is not a starting defenseman. He's a #7 and shouldn't have been playing the bulk of games that he was.

Sal-Zid was a surprisingly good pairing, so was Volch-Larsson.
Keep the old, slow guys paired with 1 of the younger, all around guys.
We can deal.

I'm not sure when exactly that was (Was it really THAT much?) It was during that 10 game losing streak without Kovy. Uncle Jesse scored a penalty shot goal, Carter scored a shorthanded goal, Garon was giving up a bunch of freebies that we usually weren't getting from other goalies. He was very generous that night, but Volchenkov and Harrold were even more generous. They tied the game with less than 20 seconds left, and Marty looked like he had never been in a shootout before in his career. The shooters also looked like novices, trying to deke Garon. It was also the debut of the Lightning's head coach who looks like Lars Ulrich. Every time Pete put Volch/Harrold on the ice, their coach would throw out Stamkos and they looked like boys amongst men out there. They couldn't even handle the scrubs like Nate Thompson.

I also went to the game the next night in Sunrise against the Panthers. Volchenkov and Harrold were both sat that game, and Tallinder and Larsson were back in. I think that's how it went. We blew the lead on a 6 on 5 again in the last minute.

Oh, our back to back "Let's give up a lead with a minute to go to two of the worst teams in the league" games. Fun times. Especially cause I was in Florida that week as well.

Was looking into buying Club Red tickets for the Panthers game but luckily decided not to go

NEVER AGAIN!!!

That pairing was death on the ice. We would of been better off just putting actual cones on the ice.

I don't like that Zids offer. 2 years is to much, especially at that price. I'd like him back, but want it cheap.

I firmly believe those two games might have cost us the playoffs. Those were two points we flushed down the commode that we basically had. We had only lost our first game out of ten before that trip. It was to Ottawa where once again Marty looked like an amateur in the shootout, and our shooters kept trying to shoot at that blimp Bishop, instead of deke.

I was happy we lost in OT during the game in Sunrise. I said after they tied it ''Let's get this over with so we can start the 4 hour ride back. Cause we definitely ain't winning this in the shootout'' I got my wish just seconds after telling my buddy that. My girlfriend refuses to go to hockey games with me anymore after that TB game. That was the first time I saw a Devils game with her, and it was a horrible experience. She was mad at me the whole ride home.

Of course they cost us the playoffs. Team completely stopped scoring and lost like 9 in a row after those two. You could just tell their mental state was completely shot. We win those games in Florida odds are we don't go on that horrendous losing streak and get some points until Kovy got back. Some of the worst shootouts ever too. UGH

Yeah I think if we beat the two corpses in Florida then we might have been able to stay afloat, or at least survived into the last week of the season, rather than get eliminated at MSG.

You gotta beat those rats in the sewer teams if you wanna stay alive. Two WORST teams in the league too, or at least the conference. All the thrown away points against the Isles too. This team really needs to start showing up to play the Isles this season. Especially since the Isles were one team that couldn't handle our forecheck at all. We could constantly wear them down with it, but the last two times we played them we didn't even establish it.

Short seasons can mess with players. No training camp. No normal routine going into the season. For some vets that can cause problems they can't get into a groove. I to hope Sal returns to the last full season Sal.
