Rangers are keeping 8 D.

He had already made the team.

I don't see how Diaz is adding anything to the D, that it was lacking.

Yandle and Boyle are supposed to be our offensive d-men. It's not like we really lack anything on D. Nor goaltending or forwards for that matter.

He carries the puck better that both of those guys.

Here's the way I see it. We have 3 great puck movers and 3 guys who....not so much.

Diaz jumps in if an offensive guy goes down. McIlrath jumps in if a defensive guy goes down.

I mean more than just an 7th/8th spot.

Could be sneaky good at es and a solid ppqb

I mean, I like having as many RH shots on the PP as possible. Can definitely see him getting games if things break right.

Two goals on a PP that he'll never see during the regular season (barring injuries) but with bad play in almost every other facet of the game, does not make a case for him over McIlrath, who conversely has had an all-around good camp.

Fortunately for him, they will likely keep 8 D.

Look at his body of work over his career. He's never been a guy teams want to hang onto for a significant time because he just doesn't quite perform throughout an entire season the way you'd want him to. It's like, you see the upsides and you think maybe he can keep doing that and improving on that and really nail down a spot, but over the long run it's not quite there.

I've got nothing against him, but I don't think the Rangers should make the mistake of investing in him as a regular player

Not gonna happen, barring injury.

I've seen this board (and myself) go prematurely ape-**** on a lot of things. Two PP goal from this guy and we're at it again.

Pretty sure Yandle had more points last season than Diaz has in his entire career. Diaz hasn't ever really produced. Like.. 4 points in 56 games for the Flames last year? He's not even a PP specialist, he just looks like one.

Calgary had much better pwp pointmen. I wouldn't hold that against him that much. He's a good pro. He's had a good career even if the NHL doesn't last much longer for him. On a weaker depth team he might fit in as a No. 5 or 6 but the Rangers are not that team. The Rangers also need what kids they have. They can't afford to lose a younger d-man with a lot of upside for a guy that lots of teams wouldn't even want.

lol...I would probably take MAB over Raphy on this team if he could still shoot the puck like he could in his heyday. For once have a lethal shot/one time option on this PP.

Never before have I seen a player with such an elite single attribute to his game with all other attributes being poor or average at best, than MAB.

His shot is/was Chara-like but everything else about the dude was an AHL calibre player.

Diaz being a pure offensive guy or really a pure PP specialist who has a good but not elite shot...Not sure if it's worth it to dress this guy just for that. You certainly do not want him deployed in situations that warrant stringent defense.

Yeah he seems like the guy who will pop up with games like this, give you belief in him, and then drop into the background like it never happened. TBH I was very unimpressed in all areas with him before yesterday.

Brooklyn, of course
It all depends on who the coaching staff feels more comfortable carrying as the 7th defenseman (if they are only going to have a 22 man roster). And perhaps who can fetch the best return in a trade.

McCabe had a howitzer for a shot when we had him for a few games

Except those howitzers never went past the shin pads of the guy in front of him.

Hey! He scored. Once.

Ironically, a pretty crucial goal for NYR, iirc.

edit: he actually had two Goals. I can't remember the 2nd though.

Yeah, Rangers just squeaked into the PO that year. Huge tying goal on the road in philly in a game they needed. They wound up winning.

Wasnt that Stralman a few years ago?
Not saying he is what Stralman is, but just because no one has held onto him doesnt mean the talent isnt there
