How long a sample are we talking?

Even something as small as a 3 season sample vs just this season, could take Duncan Keith from like #1 to #6 on my list.

Consider where the player is now.

How well is he playing throughout this year? How much of an impact will the player provide in winning the Cup this year?

Think like you're building a Cup roster now.

Ok, well in that case, I can only give you like 3 names.

1) Kane
2) Toews
3) Debrincat

Everybody else is pretty much up in the air, or not particularly important.

Strome could be a big player, need to see a larger sample to be convinced.

Saad could be a big player, but he's been inconsistent since being traded and traded back for.

Keith could be an important player on a 2nd pair, but he'd have to both give a **** and be willing to adjust his game to account for his lost half-step due to age (which he hasn't been, he's still playing like he has the legs he had in 2015).

Kahun and Kampf are both good bottom 6 guys. Useful, but not the kind of guys you write in ink on the projective lineup card for when the team is actually contending. They could just as likely be part of trades for bigger pieces.

Jokiharju looked promising, then got overwhelmed, but I expect he'll be a top 4 guy.

Delia has looked good, but again small sample.

I guess that's 10. Nobody else is really worth mentioning.

Don't take into account contracts or age. Rank them based on pure talent. Like a draft board for just this year. Don't take into account a rookie that you think could be a top 6/top 4 player in 2 years. Where does that player rank in 2018-2019?

You can rank more than 10. I just want to get a feel for which players are the best on each team outside of the obvious.

Blues:
1: Ryan O'Reilly
2: Alex Pietrangelo
3: Vladimir Tarasenko
4: Colton Parayko
5: Brayden Schenn
6: Jaden Schwartz
7: Jay Bouwmeester (when healthy)
8: Vince Dunn
9: David Perron
10: Jordan Binnington (I know! Small sample)

-I have long held that Petro was our best and most important player and it could still be true. However, ROR is insanely great! Tarasenko has become a bit too streaky and inconsistent defensively to be top 2.
-Schenn and Schwartz are about even. I gave Schenn the nod for his ability to play very well at center. You could definitely flip these two.
-Bouwmeester is still a top pairing D-man when his hip is healthy. It's so great to have the old Jay back. This dude just busts his tail every night.
-7 through 10 on this list was very difficult. The top 6 is pretty far separated from the rest. The top 3 is on another level from 4-6.
-How could I not put Binnington at 10?! He has gotten better every year in the AHL and is now great in the NHL.
I agree on the top 6 but after that I'd go.
7. Gunnarson
8. Binnington
9. Perron
10. Bouwmeester
Gunnarson has been amazing this year when healthy, and Binnington doesn't have a huge sample size but he's been so important to our success I have to move him up.

1. Mark Giordano
2. Johnny Gaudreau
3. Matthew Tkachuk
4. Elias Lindholm
5. Sean Monahan
6. Mikael Backlund
7. Travis Hamonic
8. TJ Brodie
9. Noah Hanifin
10. Michael Frolik

The top-2 are pretty clear, though I’m sure lots of people would put Gaudreau 1st, which is fine. 3-5 could be in any order. Tkachuk has slowed down lately, but I think he might be hurt. He’s carried his line up until the last couple weeks. 6-9 could also be in any order really. I prefer Hamonic over Brodie and Hanifin because he’s just so solid out there every night. After that there’s no real clear way to list it. I didn’t include goalies, because on any given night either of them could be the best or the worst player.

Bruins:

1. Bergeron - First line are the very easy first 3, although I still think there's a clear 1-3 ranking. They're way ahead of everyone else.
2. Marchand
3. Pastrnak
4. Krejci - He may be a bit underwhelming at times but he's settled into being a very good 2nd line center with very little help.
5. Rask - Goalies are just naturally inconsistent. I think he's a really solid starter even if he gets a lot of flack from Bruins fans.
6. McAvoy - Weird season with injuries, but is finally playing like he did last year after a big period of time where it looked like he'd taken a step back. On a defense that has a lot of specialists in terms of being very defensive or very offensive, he's quite well-rounded. Could easily be at #4.
7. Krug - Major flaws in his game, but he's also a tremendous puck mover and PP specialist.
8. Carlo - I think he has SOME offensive upside, but it's pretty limited. As solid as they come defensively.
9. DeBrusk - I think he's played well with the eye test even if his stats aren't up to snuff this year. Great combination of size, skill, speed and tenacity.
10. Chara - Close to a shell of his former self, he's taken a big step back this year in particular. Still a good PKer and good defensively though.
