All I'm going to say is that anyone who does this, and does not have Alex Pietrangelo ranked at least top ten, or more accurately top five, is missing the boat.

Period.

Youve got to rank Stamkos #1, and Doughty, Duchene and Tavares need to be in the top five as well... but who else that's left has been better than Pietrangelo?

Taylor Hall is more hype than production at present, and none of the 2011 potential top four have proven a blasted thing at the NHL level.

Stamkos
Doughty
Duchene
Tavares
Pietrangelo
Kane
Hall
Seguin

The Rest
How so?

First 60 NHL Games
Duchene- 20 goals and 42 points
Hall- 20 goals and 38 points
Tavares- 17 goals and 33 points
Stamkos- 13 goals and 29 points
Kane- 14 goals and 25 points

Interesting tidbit on Petro. Ottawa head scout Pierre Dorion said today on radio in 2008 they had Petro on the same level as Doughty.

Jarmo at the time thought Petro could ultimately be the best player in the draft...but was the most raw. His board had Stamkos, Doughty, Petro...in that order. We're seeing this year just why Jarmo thought that, and it wouldn't surprise me to see him become the best defender from that draft-class, Doughty included.

Don't know if I agree exactly with your list exactly, but I agree in the sense that Kane, like all Atlanta players (and the org) gets unfairly ignored on this board all the time. Most people don't watch him enough to know what kind of a player he is or what he is capable of, and in Canada we get guys like Hall (or pre-draft, OHL based kids like Tavares) shoved down our throats constantly.

I don't really like the idea of including the 2008 draft as they have had three years of development and much closer to becoming the player(s) they were projected to become. Obviously a 50 goal scorer who is currently leading the NHL in goals this year will be (and should be) tops on everyones list.

I am also not very good at comparing defensemen to forwards, I find it too subjective.

Forwards:
1. Hall
2. Tavares
3. Duchene
4. Seguin
5. Kane
6. Couturier
7. Nugent-Hopkins
8. Landeskog
9. Johansen

Defensemen:
1. Larsson
2. Hedman
3. Gudbranson

I'm not asking you to select the best overall top 4, but rather to rank each individual player in terms of projected ceiling. This is, of course, making the assumption that the expected top 4 for this upcoming draft pans out predictably.

Adam Larsson
Gabriel Landeskog
Sean Couturier
Ryan Nugent-Hopkins
Taylor Hall
Tyler Seguin
Eric Gudbranson
Ryan Johansen
John Tavares
Victor Hedman
Matt Duchene
Evander kane
Steve Stamkos
Drew Doughty
Zach Bogosian
Alex Pietrangelo

Could you be so kind as to offer a reasonably clear definition of what you mean by "projected ceiling" ?

Could you be so kind as to offer a reasonably clear definition of what you mean by "projected ceiling" ?

Usually for these types of threads, projected ceiling is the highest level the players could reach (who will be best in their prime) given the skillsets that they have.

It is incredibly problematic, because it compares rookie Taylor Hall, to 50 goal Stamkos, to 2nd year John Tavares, to Junior player RNH. You have to try to compare their skillsets and determine who will be best.

At this point, I don`t see how Stamkos and Doughty aren`t two of the tops. Pietrangelo and Bogosian both have high ceilings with Pie being closer to reaching it.

Tavares is good, but not great (especially defensively) and has largely been outplayed by Duchesne (whose all around game makes him more valuable). Hedman seems like he will be at best the 3rd best D, but could easily fall below the three 08s. Kane seems to me to be Duchesne-lite.

Hall has the speed and flair, that once he gets it, he`ll probably be the 2nd best forward on this list. Seguin is a complete forward, but looks like he will be a 2nd line center. Gudbranson and Johansen are probably the lowest guys on this list (defensive D and defensive FW with questionable offensive upside).

Of 2011, Couturier looks similar to Seguin (2nd line C). Larsson looks like he`ll be a good two way D. Landeskog seems to have some offensive ability plus leadership (2nd line center who can also be a leader). And Hopkins looks like he can be a skilled 1st liner who is more of a playmaker than sniper.

If I were to order them in terms of potential, I`d say:

Stamkos (doubt anyone reaches where he is now)
Pietrangelo (has the tools to be a stud D)
Doughty (already has a Norris finalist season)
Hall (next year is his breakout year)
Duchesne (has all the skills to be very good at both ends)
Bogosian (being in Atlanta has limited what I think he will become)
Hopkins (he will be exciting to watch in 2 years)
Landeskog - offense plus grit
Kane - can play at both ends (has good natural skill)
Tavares - good on offense, not so much in his own end
Seguin - indispensable 2nd line center
Couturier - see Seguin
Larsson - is supposed to be Hedman with a better offensive game
Hedman
Gudbranson
Johansen

The bottom 3 are more defensive players, so their ceilings are likely lower, but they are also a lot more likely to reach their ceiling. (Note: not all players ever hit their ceiling, so Bogo could easily be the worst player for example)

I agree with his list. But maybe doughty before Pietrangelo

Same goes for guys like RNH and Landeskog.

I have a feeling Larsson could end up being the best defenceman in all these drafts.

You could say the same thing about Doughty, Piet, Hedman. It is almost silly to talk about the "ceiling" for these players...basically, if ten years from now any one of these guys is considered the top dman in the game, nobody will be shocked.

Can't rank 2011 yet, haven't been pick yet, and it is really unfair to rank guys this young. Some have never seen the NHL we haven't had the time to properly assess them.
