2000 Devils had an easier path than the 07 Sens, but I gave NJ the edge for their better reg season.

Toughest path was easily the 04 Flames (#6)...

4-3 over #3 VAN
4-2 over #1 DET
4-2 over #2 SJ
4-3 Loss #1 TB

07 Sens (#4) were very impressive as well...

4-1 over #5 PIT
4-1 over #2 NJ
4-1 over #1 BUF
4-1 loss to #2 ANA

I agree that the Oilers were a great team masquerading as a borderline playoff squad. Any team with Chris Pronger has a chance. And then you throw in the forward depth that they had, and you've got the makings of a good team. That being said, goaltending is part of a team and they were brutal for 3/4 of a season.

1. Devils
2. Wings
3. Stars
4. Pens
5. Sens
6. Oilers
7. 'Canes
8. Mighty Ducks
9. Flames

Good 5-year period full of underdog teams, and 3 of them were in the obstruction era.

Hard not to vote for:

Jere Lehtinen - Mike Modano - Brett Hull
Brenden Morrow - Joe Nieuwendijk - Jamie Langenbrunner
Scott Thornton - Guy Carbonneau - Mike Keane
Grant Marshall - Kirk Muller - Blake Sloan

Darryl Sydor - Sergei Zubov
Derian Hatcher - Richard Matvichuk
Dave Manson - Jamie Pushor

Eddie Belfour
Emanuel Fernandez

That team was build for the playoffs in the clutch and grab DP era..

It's hard not to be biased here, but the 01 Devils were the best runners-up I have seen in my somewhat short lifetime. That team was a wrecking ball that had a chance to put away a stacked Avs team but just couldn't do it.

Still somewhat bitter from 03. The Devils played well, and so did the Ducks. Both teams never won in the other's house, if only we had home ice advantage!

Not going to rank all the teams but the '09 Wings have to be in the top three on this list IMO. In the 100+ history of the Stanley Cup Finals no losing team has had a better goal differential than that Detroit squad.

By the same token the '04 Flames should also be higher on most people's lists, as they were the only other Stanley Cup loser in the modern era to outscore their opponents in the series.

We outscored them so badly that they didn't count our most important goal... :shakehead
Will never forget that moment. Still have the front page of the news paper from the morning after framed on my wall clearly showing the puck over the line. Would have been Gelinas' 4th series ending goal in a row to boot.

Sigh.

03 Ducks really shouldn't have been in the finals. On paper they were downright horrible. Thanks to Giguere giving the biggest play-off goalie show probably ever, they knocked out Stars and Wings who both were HUGE favorites (double payroll and absolutely loaded teams).

Except it wasn't. Clearly inconclusive on the overhead.

I thought the Flames outplayed the Lightning in 04. I was rooting for the Lightning hard that series and remember being really frustrated.

2001 Devils - Fantastic roster. Barely above the Wings, but they take #1.
2009 Wings - Underrated. Only real flaw was their PK.
2000 Stars - Still a great team compared to 1999
2008 Penguins - Star forwards puts them above the Sens
2007 Senators - Needed scoring depth, but still a very strong team.
2004 Flames - People never talk about all of the injuries they faced during the playoffs and they still made it to game 7 of the SCFs
2006 Oilers - Taking the finals to 7 with your backup goalie is amazing. Cant believe people think their roster is mediocre.
2003 Mighty Ducks - Would be higher if not for them getting lit up away in NJ all 4 games. Also needing so many OT wins doesn’t help.
2002 Canes - Nothing special. Good goaltending and 5 on 5… not much else to say
