I was just thinking about how the Canucks had been trying to pry Brassard away from Columbus for years when I read this. Also the Clowe connection.

Clowe is in a tricky situation. He might be better off signing a one-year deal to show his ability is still there and the injuries aren't a concern. The issue then is do the Rangers give him a one-year deal, forfeit the 2nd round pick and then risk losing him after next season if he pans out.

What Alain Vigneault will bring to the Rangers...

I cannot hide it. I must say I am impressed and fully excited for the next season with Alain Vigneault as our new coach. This was the equivalent of a big free agent signing. Change was needed for so many reasons, and like Sather said "We got the right guy".

Advanced Stats-
Head coaches hes worked for and coached against alongside his bosses and assistants have talked exclusively about A.V and his passion for stats and film. I think its crucial to be a student of the game, studying all aspects of it and finding anyway to make you and your team better. Film and stats is a way to go, something Torts was not a huge fan of. Only in the last 2 seasons did Torts start using film and it was more to pick on his own players issues than to change game plans and what not. A.V will do a lot of his own HW on his team but even more on his enemies and this will give us a better leader.

Though he is known for his zone matching, it was the advanced stats that the Vancouver organization developed that allowed his system to truly shine. According to the recent press conference, A.V will implement advanced stats into the NYR the same way Vancouver did it. This will greatly feed into his Zone Matching which is basically his ability to choose which line to go out at certain situations. Rather than leaving it out to gut feelings... hes applied stats to it. Thats all, simple. Shocked more teams dont fall into it. A lot of work I assume.

A.V will have several assistants on board. Torts only wanted 1 guy, Mike Sullivan. Who honestly didnt do a very good job on his main responsibilities... Improve the PP. He only made it worse.

A.V wants NHL experienced assistants. 2 on the bench, 1 goalie and 1 in the suites. Not really uncommon, but different. I think a team like the Rangers who have so much money should have always done this. I know too many voices can be an issue, but it doesnt have to be if there A.V is as good of a coach as many proclaim.

I particularly love the suite coach. Have never heard that really in the NHL (could be wrong). You have guys to assist you during the play but always another view of things. Really like that. A.V looks open to criticism so its good to hear.


FLUID OFFENSE/TEAM DEFENSE
Torts was a good coach, dont get me wrong. But I like A.V ideology. Watched a few Vancouver highlights. They move the puck fast, they move diligently without it. He allows defenders to track up and help the forwards. Good, I like team game. Should bold well for guys like Moore, McDonagh and Del Zotto.

Under Torts. The team played to much north and south. Never really moved the puck as a team. Or at least inconsistently. Dumped, which is fine, but no much chasing. A.V will focus on 5 man units. Rather than 3 forwards and 2 D.

The team is very similar too to his Canucks roster. I think probably even more disciplined though, and even more balanced. Callahan is similar to Kesler. Nash is similar to Daniel Sedin. Brassard to Burrows. Staal/McDonagh to Edler. He is use to the Swedes too.

Was on the fence about the hiring. But now that it is official, and thinking about the hiring objectively, if Jim Nill who was in the Red Wings management for 19 years offers Vigneault a contract, that is good enough for me. Vigneault is the correct choice.

I agree Thesensation19. I think the Rangers actually did this with Charlie Huddy in 1999. Not the fondest of memories but Muckler had MacTavish, (I believe Keith Acton) as the bench coaches and Huddy in the suite. I'll have to try and see what The Google can find.

I think he re-signs for a few years. He is the type of player Gorton craves in his line-up to augment his skill guys. Look at Boston.

I don't think they will be scared away, for good or for bad.

I dont' really think the Rangers are so bereft of talent that they can't play an offensive style, but the key is getting everyone playing well. If you're not stacked with superstars (or even sometimes when you are), if your offense struggles then you just plain look like crap even if you have talented players.

Nash, Stepan, Brassard, Zucarello, Callahan, Richards (to some extent...sometimes), and Hagelin to some degree are skilled guys who can play a possession game if they get it all going (Hagelin is good at hanging onto the puck at least). Bottom line players like Boyle, Dorsett, Powe, Asham, and Pyatt aren't bad if used correctly. The Rangers have guys who can move the puck on the back end (McDonagh, Moore, Staal, Del Zotto).

They're not a super skilled team, but they're skilled enough that if they are coached right they should be able to do well. They never really seemed in sync with each other last year

Amid rumours that he's been offered the vacant Canucks' coaching job, former New York Rangers bench boss John Tortorella is scheduled to arrive at Vancouver International Airport this afternoon.

The Vancouver Sun has confirmed that Tortorella, who has interviewed twice for the Vancouver job, is on United flight #323 which is expected to arrive at YVR at 1:06 p.m.

The Tortorella decision was likely influenced by the Canucks owner, billionaire Francesco Aquilini. He is, in general, active with the team throughout the year, in constant contact with Gillis several times a day, though the owner generally leaves his president to run the team. This time, however, Aquilini is believed to have played an active role in the interviewing and hiring of the coach, a result of the disappointment of watching his large investment in the team result in nothing.

Aquilini has always provided Gillis the millions to spend right to the salary cap and also much more to provide additional assets such as a posh locker room and team facilities at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, as well as a sleep doctor and a troupe of other specialists. It is unclear whether Tortorella is interested in seeing his players have yoga sessions among their fitness routines, a staple of recent years.

Aquilini has a reputation for emotional, at times petulant, outbursts – particularly well-known for his upset and anger at reporters in the Canucks locker room after his team collapsed in Game 7 of the Stanely Cup final two years ago and lost 4-0 to Boston. Vigneault’s relatively mild manner was not in sync with Aquilini. Vigneault would often leave it to his players to hash out problems in between periods in games in which the team had problems.

I think he's a valuable coach for developing young players and defense in general. Just give the PP responsibility to someone else.

Wouldn't hate to see Messier get the job of suite coach. Might suit him and give him coaching experience.

Pay cut? Tell it to his agent who asked the Sharks for $34M over 8 years. Its always comes down to money regardless of what the player says. Reportedly,the Flyers and the agent Kent Hughes had reached a deal for $30M over 8 years but the Sharks and Flyers couldn't agree on the trade.

According to Robin Short, of the St. John Telegram, where Clowe is from, the Flyers and Clowe had worked out an extension that was eight years and around $30 million, but the players going to San Jose couldn’t be agreed upon.

Renaud Lavoie tweeted three days ago that Clowe is looking for an extension of 7-8 years.

The first minute of AV's Q & A gives the explanation as to why ultimately Tort's got fired: Skilled players not given the latitude to make skilled plays when the opportunity presents itself.

Now whether the players went to Sather & Co. with that, Sather & Co. made their own determination that this was the case of some combination, that's what it comes down to IMO.

And it's a fair case to make. Again, I loved Torts. Wish him the best.

Seriously people? There are plenty of times where it is easier to identify issues from outside a situation than inside. Saying you know problems and have identified solutions is not at all the same thing as saying you would be good as implementing those solutions. There is a reason why consulting is such a lucrative business.

It's an indictment on Tortorella that he didn't adapt to a different roster. But it isn't surprising. Who was it who said that one of the hardest things in sports is to go into a halftime, as a coach, of a Super Bowl and throw out the strategy that got you there, because it isn't working anymore. Tortorellas situation was a microcosm of that. And ultimately, it cost him his job.

Was it not working because they lasted one less playoff series? If they had beaten Boston would that have meant it was working?

Is the difference between the seasons Nash vs. Dubinsky and Anisimov? Is it Prust leaving?

To wbat do you attribute this difference of lasting one less playoff series? I ron't understand how you guys quantify this stuff.

Yep. According to Brooks, it was speculated that he suffered one in SJ and then had two with the Rangers. At least, two but maybe three in a 48 game season. Definite cause for concern.
