... A side note... I hate the term “extend” in regards to NHL contracts. Nobody ever extends. It’s a brand new contract with different terms. /rant

sorry, but i think you are imposing your own terminology (i do that too sometimes)
and it s not worth hating

i understand the literal semantics of your view

but is pretty much common, understood usage to call it "extending"
when a player, while still under contract, re-signs with the team,

and btw i am glad Aaron Hicks extended w NYY today too

I’ve liked him as a 4th liner this year. It’s all he’ll ever be, but it’s a good fit.

Yes, true. As a one-way contract, no more piddling minor league salary if he is demoted. Still makin' that money in Hfd.

I think this is good.

If we did not know him, and he was traded as a tertiary piece, somehow I feel as if this would be seen as at least more exciting.

Yeah, and the 2013 CBA calls it that too, but I think the 2005 one did not.

It's a pet peeve, because to me an extension would apply to continuing the terms of the current contract... in other words, a renegotiation of the current deal, which is prohibited. I'm not saying it's rational.
