From Elite Prospects:
Right now, Hank Kempf doesn’t look like much. He’s sturdy, but not a standout USHL defender as a draft-plus-one. He has no track record of scoring. His skating’s a touch below average, while his puck control is clearly a step below it. But a closer inspection reveals enough potential that could entice an NHL team. Defence will probably be where Kempf finds success in the NHL, provided he makes a couple of changes. “He’s physical and keeps a tight gap through multi-variable situations,” Elite Prospects Dir. of North American Scouting Mitchell Brown wrote in a February game report. “A lack of angling ability (he’s too close to the attacker laterally too early) will limit his effectiveness at the next level. But his posture and engagement are projectable. In the DZ, he scans for threats and promptly eliminates them.” But defence alone probably won’t be enough for Kempf; he’ll have to be able to break the puck out, too. The good news is that there are reasons for optimism in that regard. He uses the middle lane when possible, looks for the cross-ice breakout option, deceives defenders in the neutral zone, and some rush activation. But, his decision-making leaves plenty to be desired. He has a tendency to throw away possession when pressured in the corners, frequent poor play selection, and inconsistent activation reads. Offence is a similar gamble on infrequent flashes, betting on Kempf’s shooting. “Shot looks like a comfortable above NHL average projection: Hands in front, back leg kicked out with a stable platform, powered through his shot, and elbow up to maximize his angle-change ability,” Brown wrote in a February game report. And here are the flaws, as Brown describes, “I don’t think he recognizes space before the pass, and his passing is very limited -- probably doesn’t scale up particularly well.”

That scouting report reads like a f***in obituary for his hockey career. jesus christ lol

Yea dis kid got some projectionables.

He panics like an elephant in a mouse parade, is dog shit with the puck, can't take angles, can't shoot, can't pass, can't make reads, he scores about as well as a poor leper in a house of rich escorts and quite frankly his bony ass won't even warm a bench up right but we think he could entice someone bc...well shit, philanthropy or something idfk

They...led off...with "he don't look like much" f***s sake who the hell's tea did he piss into!? Goddamn. Bury the guy harder

Yeah lol, so many of these scouting reports lifts the players strong point, but EP really goes nutty gritty and sets the bar high. Thing is, just about all reports look like this starting fairly early.

I love EP as a site for data and tracking players, but personally, I have found their scouting to be pretty lacking. Almost every scouting report is just a word salad of overly-technical terminology. It seems pretty pretentious, honestly, like the people writing it are just trying as hard as they can do demonstrate to someone that they know how to watch a teenager and analyze his knee bend and the angle his skates point when he's closing a gap. It all sounds kind of farcical. I like their draft guides, too, but it's more of the same with those.

This is one of those "all scouting reports aren't made the same" types of things. EP tries too hard and looks at things that honestly, you could identify in many very successful NHL players.

Yeah, like I said above, EP goes a bit over the top with their "analysis" of some of these kids.

Love EP and definitely recommend their premium service, but I agree and especially in relation to so-so prospects. Then it’s just a long list of “he doesn’t do this well”.
