First off, I've been playing goal for almost 40 years, which makes me old and somewhat out of the loop when it comes to new styles and techniques.

I was watching the Cam Ward own goal video and noticed that he wears players skates not goalie skates. You can see as clear as day that his blade is rockered not flat like a typical goalie blade.

Is this normal? Or is this a one off?

Odd thing is you can easily find pics of him wearing traditional goalie skates. Either he made a switch recently, or he’s using some newer model that’s a hybrid between the two.

Cam has gotten A LOT better and more active at puckhandling over the past couple of years. This may be part of that.

I don't think so, but obviously not 100%. If you look at the boot, it's identical to a players skate. There isn't even a protective shell around it.

Odd.....

The ankle of the boot is a bit lower than a typical players skate. It must be a hybrid.

Still a weird looking skate.

They really do look like player skates.. that's baffling to me.

His VH skates are just 2 piece now with no cowling. Lighter, gives goalies the ability to get at a lower angle while still maintaining ice contact with the blade.

Yep that's it.

Carey Price talks skate, stance and pad changes - InGoal Magazine

But Price uses the same company and this talks about his modifications and you can see in the screen shots that his blade is not curved like that.

I suppose it makes sense......with the butterfly style, ie. no turning your skate outwards anymore, there is no need for a big protective shell.

The more you know.......

You've played goalie longer than me, but I still probably couldn't get over not having a big cowling. I still take shots off those areas. But I play more hybrid style so.

Agree 100%.....the older I get the slower I get, which leaves me out of position a lot! So I go full Hasek, which leaves me in precarious situations at times!!

I’d imagine a standard goalie skate wouldn’t have enough room between the boot and blade for a puck to get stuck. Would I be right?

He’s pulling the puck out of Ward’s skate. There’s another thread on the fluke goal.

I have to think the company will change the shape of that gap. The last thing a goalie needs is a puck sized hole in his skate.
Hahaha true. Could just put a slot in the blade holder if having the height is an advantage for some reason.
It wont be hard to fix anyways
