Welcome to the Most Realistic Be a GM League on HF Boards! ...Starting September 21, 2012

GM Rules:
Game Rules:
*The Bold Proposal*:
I'm thinking of having this league run by a dictatorial approach. Having a cadre of five or more well-knowledged GM's that run the league according to a CURRENTLY undefined 'realistic factor'--vis-a-vis, that "core" or "elite" players like Sidney Crosby, Jonathan Toews, Duncan Keith, Shea Weber, Henrik Zetterberg, Jordan Eberle, etc. cannot be moved unless there are immediate circumstances that allow for it--more on that just below. Players like Mike Richards, Patrick Kane, Evengeni Malkin, David Perron, Patrice Bergeron, Brian Gionta, David Backes, Jay Bouwmeester, etc., all these and other players are open to trade. Only a very restricted group will not be open, unless that is, there is immediate extenuating circumstances either in reality (lack of performance / discontent with team) or in-game (lack of performance/ significant regression).
The only necessity for membership in the group would be adhering to a very basic understanding of NHL hockey as it progresses in reality. Based perhaps on regularly contributed restricted lists of some kind that could exceed no more players than a certain arbitrary amount--like ten. The small lists would be exposed publicly, and open to constant scrutiny. Anyone not on the list is virtually eligible for any trade of any kind. If needed, elections can be conducted to change members of the group, including all GMs and the commissioner, himself. This would prevent members of the all-powerful cadre from unfairly protecting their assets while freeing others. Of course, we could always have the lists submitted voluntarily, absent of all players being publicly sought after or of all players on one's own team.
By running the league authoritatively--or, by higher-standards, applying an even more democratic UN-style approach--we make it slightly less democratic, but also far more efficient, and infinitely more realistic. We remove the cumbersome approach of confirmations and rejections, and so on and so forth. And we also remove trades that counter the rationalistic approach to fantasy hockey. We remove arbitrary trade-caps and put an end to silly roster-freezes used to counter excessive and wildly artificial trades. And we remove the trades that make us question whether the league was created via a fantasy draft.
Hockey has its union and its cadre of owners, I say "let us establish our own super-union that attempts to make the most realistic online Be a GM Connected game yet, and for many years forward!" Again, this will not mean that trades are constantly restricted, quite the opposite. Only in the most extremely unrealistic instances will a trade-bloc be used. 99% of the league will still be open to trade. The league will merely be run in a more organized, and frankly representative and realistic manner. If people agree with this notion, please speak up. Those who disagree feel free to express themselves. I believe there are many others out there who would like to make the most vaguely realistic Be a GM possible. If enough agree to this idea, I will rename the thread "[PS3] Very Realistic GM Connected League, and I will be taking applications for membership into this all-powerful group.
Shortly after announcing the bold proposal, four GMs in our league came forward to become co-commissioners. To avoid cohesion and conflicts of interest, we invited one GM from each division in the NHL. Representing Division A/The Gretzky Division is CalgaryFlames1240 (GM of the Calgary Flames), representing Division B/The Howe Division is epinephrine (GM of the Chicago Blackhawks), representing Division C/The Orr Division is both myself AlexanderTheGood (GM of the Boston Bruins) and LilySmoov (GM of the Ottawa Senators), finally, representing Division D/The Lemieux Division is gmerger37 (GM of the New York Rangers). Collaboratively, this group formulated a definition of what we call the "realistic barrier," which will instruct the cadre on all future decision making.
Before moving onto that definition, for future reference, here are the co-commissioners:

“Realistic Barrier†definition: A trade will have crossed the realistic barrier, or threshold, on the premise that it is superfluous, chimerical, phantasmagorical or outright unrealistic. Because the definition is fairly wide, it is important to note that the spectre of the co-commissioner cadre is not one to fear. 99% of the trades conducted in our league will go nowhere near the realistic barrier—but some will. This is why our league requires a definition of the term “realistic barrierâ€â€”equipped with plentiful and wide-ranging examples—that can stand on its own two feet. Trades will not be vetoed because we deem them “unfair,†but rather, if we deem them categorically “unrealistic.†As co-commissioner gmermger37 notes, “it is important to draw a distinction that our league has realistic in its title, and therefore it shouldn't look like a fantasy hockey lineup after a week of trades.â€
A superfluous trade, for instance, is one conducted purely for the sake of trade. As co-commissioner LilySmoov describes it, “Basically, moving pieces for the sake of moving pieces. One example of it I suppose could be if I [the Ottawa Senators] traded Kyle Turris, Jason Spezza, and a 1st to the Caps for Marcus Johansson, Backstrom, and their 1st. The trade addresses nothing for either team and would be orchestrated out of naught but player preference rather than anything resembling necessity.†These are the types of trades our league and our co-commissioner cadre attempts to curb. An important asterisk associated with superfluous trading, is that a trade involving two fairly evenly matched players—say, for instance, Michael Ryder for Martin Havlat—would not be deemed superfluous because neither player can be easily recognized as a core asset in either franchise.
A chimerical or phantasmagorical trade, on the other hand, is a trade that arises via a fanciful imagination that completely lacks grip in the real world. For instance, it is not permissible for the GM of the Pittsburgh Penguins to post that Darren Dreger is reporting that Sidney Crosby “really doesn't like Pittsburgh anymore†and then trade that player for three first round picks. Naturally, chimerical trades will become less and less of an issue as the GM league progresses, because the disconnect between the game and reality will become further and further split as we move from one-season-to-the-next. In other words, if by Season 3 Crosby is not performing well, statistically speaking, or is suffering from nagging injuries, or the Penguins miss the playoffs for multiple years in a row, trading Crosby for three first round picks does not whatsoever near the realistic barrier. Fantasy hockey is, by its very nature, a chimerical and phantasmagorical pursuit, and thus, vetoing trades because they are “unrealistic†is something that will be done in only the most drastic circumstances.
Other information on the “realistic barrierâ€: All GM's in our league have the power to 'flag' a trade as being unrealistic—again this is not to be done in the case of trades deemed “unfair†or “uneven,†but rather, in the case of trades being patently “unrealistic.†But, as co-commissioner epinephrine notes, it is important to "keep an eye out for teams that seem to be doing a lot of trades with each other that are kind of becoming suspicious. I remember being in a SIM league back in the day and one team made some slightly one sided trades to another team which happened to be a friend. The team on the losing side of the trade wasn't interested in being in the league anymore so it sort of stacked the other team. ...Stuff like that that can muck up a league pretty quickly." With that being said, if a trade is flagged, it will be investigated by the co-commissioners and a vote will be conducted amongst the co-commissioners. So, be watchful, but also, please limit the number of flags, as it is a time-consuming process for us to deliberate on each and every trade deemed “unrealistic.†In the unlikely event that a trade is vetoed, a Shanahanesque point-form reasoning will be posted and will be open to public scrutiny. If enough GM's in our league feel that the cadre has over-extended its power, then a vote may be conducted, in which all members of the HF forum are allowed to vote.
