The initial report of the Leafs imminently signing him must have been false. If the Leafs liked him to any major degree, they'd have found a way: move someone like Ben Smith for the contract space or just use the 50th contract space and worry about making room later.

With Smith it was first and foremost an expansion move and the team needed a contract in the books in a specific time frame. There was obviously some interest considering they were a hair away from signing him

he just won the Hobey Baker, so "sucks" might be going a bit too far.
