I was resigned to him being cut loose. Here's a repeat of a post I made in March after his final game, he's a Freddy Gauthier type of prospect:

All 3 previous winners signed ELCs and are AHLers in 2016-17. 2 (Sean Kuraly and Nic Dowd) have played games in the NHL this season. Maybe don't write off Toninato so quickly.

P.S. Toninato scored his 15th tonight in a NCHC Frozen Faceoff win over North Dakota.

Toninato is a pretty decent prospect to have.

Good frame, 6'2, lengthy
Good speed, somewhat of an awkward skating stance (kind of like Connor Brown)
Good defensively
Limited offensive upside

He could be a 4th line centre someday. Or he could end up in Europe.

Frattin was a big time scorer in college with a deadly shot. In Frattin's final season he was a Hobey Baker finalist because he led the NCAA in goals. Toninato evolved into a defensive specialist. Aside from both being college players there actually isn't that much similarity between the two

Best news of the day. Was one of the NCAA best defensiv forwards. Watched the Bulldogs a fair bit over the years - has issues with skating and playmaking but has a good shot.

Honestly think he has a better chance of being a NHL 4C than Gauthier st this point.

The kid is a couple months away from free agency and he was offered an ELC, Hunter must think he has upside.

He seemed to have some offensive potential whenever I watched him in development camp and pre-season games. Did his offensive game just hit a wall in college?
