No because we have sucked for the last 7 years or so? Maybe?
How many of the players tonight have been a part of those 7 years?

Forwards who have been on the Devils before 2020-21: Bastian (8 GP before 20-21), McLeod (33 GP before 20-21) and Wood (268 GP before 20-21).

Defensemen who have been on the Devils before 2020-21: none. Goalies the same.

The early crying in this thread is something.

Again, my bad. Listen today in another devils podcast. And read it on Twitter somewhere.

And yeah, I want to see Zetterlund, Holtz, Thompson in the roster, but for now I love Bastian much more. If we could sign him for 4 years on cheap deal, I would buy his jersey.
I got my brother a OG #42 Bastian jersey way back when.

Officially losing my mind. I cannot believe I can’t identify this song and it’s driving me nuts.

Whats the song they played during the replays of the Haula ENG?? At 8:35 in the video

Edit: EUREKA. When you were young, the Killers.

Gotta say I’m not a fan of B. Smith. Gets beat to the outside far too often and seems to concede his size advantage with bad angles.

Hope Bahl or Okh can grab that spot.

Pre-season, Regular season, rabbit season, duck season. Doesn't matter, F the Rags
In which vein, I particularly loved the play where Zetterlund leveled Fox into the boards during a scrum behind the Rangers net, and then Fox spent the next thirty seconds unsuccessfully trying to retaliate and run Z. Fox just lost it, ignored the play, and went after him at least 3 times and would have dropped the gloves. Z was having none of it.

The great Norris trophy winning Fox believes himself above being hit.

Gosh how I detest the Rangers. Based on what we saw from them last night, I don’t think they are making the same run this year as last. Or at least they aren’t coming out of the starting gate with a great deal of focus.

our top line today (mercer/haula/zetterlund) is basically a 3rd line. i assume we played them against our top line?

in theory, they would be our checking line in the reg season, and we just tested them against the rags top guys (minus panarin though)
Haula and Mercer were both centers tonight - with both seeing extended ice time once Thompson was injured.

According to post-game Haula played 24 minutes; yet received very little mention from Kasan and Matt (not surprising) nor most of the posters on here.

This game was the perfect start to my birthday even if it meant staying up way too late. Both defense and goaltending looked solid, which is a nice change. I couldn’t care less about the PP, it’s not the right personnel. Dougie started with a dumb mistake but more than made up for it later. It felt so good to see Wood back in shape and playing really well, I can’t explain why I like him so much! New guys looked really good. Bratt and Nico were invisible. I don’t want to put too much into preseason games, but it was very enjoyable!

Fun game to watch. Loving the fight among the forwards vying for spots in the bottom 6.

Tatar had a really good game and looks like he's gonna force himself in the opening night lineup. Zetterlund had another solid game and should be a lock to make the roster, if not the opening night lineup as well. Bastian looked good all around, while McLeod was solid defensively and on faceoffs but his usual black hole on offense - but I think these two are still playing game 1. Wood also had another solid game.

Going to be interesting to see how Boqvist & Johnsson respond tonight as they're not just fighting for playing time but a roster spot as well.

Clarke had a rough game, while Foote just looks way too slow to play at this level. Not that either one really had a shot of making the opening night roster, but both still have a ways to go. If the season started today & everyone was healthy, I'd still waive Johnsson & Bernier to make room for Holtz & Zetterlund and would hope that Johnsson goes unclaimed to have that depth in the AHL as it's still lean at forward beyond the big club.

Really liking the acquisitions of Haula and Marino and hot damn is it fun and nostalgic to see this level of goaltending.

Of course they were invisible.

THEY DIDN'T PLAY.

Nico was out with "Cramps" which apparently is code for "Hamstring Injury"

Bratt was healthy scratched because he'll play in the next Preseason game.
