this is how Bowman won with Montreal in the late 70's, brutal practices, then the games seemed like vacation.....work 'em Coach Torts

You do realize things that worked 50 years ago are not what works today. Things evolve.
you'll learn as you get older that not much time has gone by ;)

"things" have gotten softer .....that Habs team would DOMINATE in todays NHL :teach2:

They played in a weak and watered down league. Their expansion era compared to prospect pool size would be like if today's league suddenly expanded to 60-90 teams.

LOL i'm probably older than you think...

And I've evolved...
you saw some of the best from the 70's ..... LaFleur, Bourque, Dryden, Parent, Robinson, Potvin, Clarke, Dionne etc., etc. wouldn't dominate todays NHL ??
Bobby Orr certainly WOULD with the current no hook no hold NHL.....he'd "run amok"

Sorry you don't like hard facts
more of a hard OPINION .....of which you are WRONG

Not really. Depth talent in the 70s was bad compared to now. Lesser number of star talent, too. It's simple numbers. The NHL in the 70s recruited almost exclusively from a smaller Canadian population, and some northern US regions. Today's NHL recruits from a much larger population spanning the US, Europe, and Russia. For a 6 team league that was fine. Increasing the league threefold without a corresponding boost in talent pool inevitably watered the league down severely. The NHL outgrew its talent pool in the 70s, which had a lot to do with them starting to look abroad more and more to find what they needed. Competition from the WHA hurt the situation too. The league has more teams now, but the increase in talent pool size far outpaces league size.

Sometimes the past isn't better. Often, it isn't. You're just nostalgic.

With the evolution of the game the players of today have evolved to know how to use body/stick position to fend off attacks that were stopped by the hold/hooks you remember. Again you underestimate todays players based upon what you want the game to be. My favorite players come from the times in between the 70's and today. Why? They had a mix of both. I loved watching Mark Howe either use his perfect stick/body position to stop an offensive rush get the puck the literally slow the game down as he moved the puck up ice for an offensive foray. Then move to the next era and see Eric Desjardins and Nick Lidstrom do the same skills just a little differently because the rules changed again. Today those guys would be Cale Makar. The game may evolve but there is always someone who fills the space you think would run amok in todays NHL. No they wouldn't they would just be among the best in the game in any era.
