Darling recently said he was now back at his Chicago playing weight.

25 lbs on the way up last offseason + 25 lbs on the way down this offseason = 50 lbs

It isn’t being big or being small that contributes to issues. It’s the swing that causes joint, muscle, and skeletal concerns. Takes time to equilibrate.

I think you are really "stretching" on this. He played an entire season last year and spent 12 months at 250 lbs so his body was this way for a year. He then lost 25 lbs (10%) in 3 months. If anything, I'd say his better condition makes him less susceptible to injury. It could be as simple as last year, he wasn't in good enough shape to make the move he made which caused the issue.

Anyhow, none of us know for sure what his full training regimen was so it's just idle speculation. Maybe it contributed and maybe it didn't, we'll never know.

Yeah, I'm inclined to believe that he'd actually be less injury prone now that he's leaner and putting less weight on his joints.

Typically we hear about guys getting injured after a big change in physique because they're putting on a whole bunch of muscle. The adjustment period comes when the joints are asked to hold all that extra weight, while lifting/pushing at a level which was not possible before the muscles got swole. All it takes is one little piece of the puzzle left undeveloped, and you get that *pop* and crutches for a month.

In this case, surely Darling didn't actually put on muscle while also losing 25lb in three months. It sounds like he just straight-up shed body fat, while by all indications would mean a lighter physical workload and less chance of blowing a knee or hip.

Most likely he just landed awkwardly and tweaked something. Has anyone seen a replay of the Smith goal?

By implication doesn't that mean the body fat is replaced by lean muscle mass? I'm no biologist so I don't really know, but given all the video of his workouts, he was not just losing weight, he was toning muscle.

Are you sure? It might have just been a tweek, and he's already recovered.

Or maybe it's our worst fear.....maybe he was just hungry....

Not necessarily. You can have very strong muscles under a layer of fat -- think NFL linemen, who have enormous muscles while also being fat. If they start biking and running to burn away the fat, that doesn't make their muscles bigger. If anything they would probably lose muscle in the process, given the type of diet and exercise required to dramatically cut down weight. They would definitely look more toned as skinny guys, but they'd be physically weaker.

Now granted, Scott Darling is not a defensive tackle. His physiology should have leaned toward being trim and in shape to begin with. In all likelihood, he was so out of shape that he probably actually did build back some muscle -- just not a whole lot of it. I say that only because it's extremely hard to knock off 25-30 lbs of fat in 3 months while also putting on a lot of muscle mass, and doing so wouldn't benefit a goalie very much anyway.
