Makes you wonder doesn't it. Eakins can do whatever he wants but if the players continue on with their sloppy and lazy play what is going to change? The effort tonight was just as poor as any we saw under Renney or Ralph ... or even Quinn. So is it really going to make a difference if Eakins "loses his mind"?

I mean they mustered four shots in the final period. Less than twenty for the game. This while tuning up for an extremely important season, and trying to impress a new coach.

Taylor Hall explaining now on the post game show how the poor effort is down to the awful ice conditions ...

And Dubnyk .... dreadful.

Meh, like I said, the 5-2-1 record means nothing for me, so I'm as pissed about this one as I was happy about beating the Canucks twice.

October 1 is a whole different story. Let's just hope tonight was a bit of a wake up call.

The thing is I can see the three scoring lines thing working if RNH and Gagner were healthy. A top line like...
Hall RNH Yakupov
Perron Gagner Eberle
Smyth Gordon Hemsky

Imo all three of those lines are able to score.

I like those lines. I think Hall and Yak need to play together after what they displayed at the end of last season. Hopefully Eakins is aware of the chemistry they had and doesn't stick YAK on the 3rd line with mediocre talent like Smyth and Gordon.

This! You put offensively talented players with other offensively talented players that can anticipate their plays and generate chances for each other. You don't put defensive specialists like Gordon with offensive dynamos like Yak or worthless anchors like Smyth with play driving catalysts like Hall. And since I might as well turn this into my signature at this point:

Ryan Smyth belongs on waivers. Not the first line.
Smyth on waivers? That's a bit intense. He is still good on the penalty kill and can thrive on the third or fourth lines.

We wont have to worry about that. Old yeller will be dragging down Hall instead.

As I left the arena, caught a glimpse of Dallas Eakins. Guy had fiery laser beams leaving his pupils. #Oilers

Awesome.

I just worry for the guy's health now that the regular season is about to start.

Our best duos are Hall Yakupov, Perron Eberle. Hall and Yak both have the speed and amazing shots. Have both of those on a line and they will do well. Perron and Eberle have amazing hands, great hockey iq but both look for pretty plays, which will work for them because they play the same and with more chemistry they will be terrifying. RNH on the top line works as he has the play making to set both of them up and Gagner works for Perron and Eberle because Gagner likes to screen and pick up rebounds. A healthy Oilers will be great... Right now unless the team smarten up and work with what they have, they won't start well

Good thing he's healthy and in good shape for an older guy.... watching these types of games behind the bench has to raise blood pressure by a good 50 pts.
Eakins is in as good of shape as most of the players if not better.

Oilers win...doesn't matter, it's only preseason!!!

Oilers lose...serious business suddenly.

Typical.

Smyth on waivers? That's a bit intense. He is still good on the penalty kill and can thrive on the third or fourth lines.

No he can't. He has no offence and kills the play with 30mph slapshots and piss poor wraparounds, so he can't contribute goals. He takes dumb selfish offensive zone penalties, makes tons of giveaways, and can't make or take a pass without making it look like handling a grenade, so he's beyond useless at cycling. He's not physical at all, so he can't be a pure banger like Mike Brown. He's too immobile and slow footed to forecheck. He can't keep up with the play and is a liability on the breakout. He's too slow to backcheck nor get into defensive position. Even if he's somehow in position, the opposing forwards just skate around him, so he can't be used in an even strength shutdown role either. The one thing he's supposedly good at: getting the puck along the boards and tipping pucks, he's been neglecting in favour trying to "drive the play", "generate offence", and "cycle the puck". The one thing that could make him a serviceable 4th liner, he doesn't even do that much. What does Ryan Smyth bring to the table other than draw in Smyth fanboys who believe that Old Yeller can do no wrong to buy tickets?

Ryan Smyth belongs on waivers. Not the first line.

Holy **** man come up with a new refrain.
Until Ryan Smyth proves he can play a style in a role that doesn't harm the team, that is fully what I believe. The guy is done.

Thrive? He was barely a 4th line player last season in only 48 games. He will be press box material by about game 30 of the regular season, if not sooner.

Did the dude bang your wife or something? You have such a hard on for hating the guy. I agree he has no place on the top two lines but not on the team at all? He is better then our entire fourth line and can for sure play there. He had a rough year last year cause he was being out as a center which just does not work. He had played better in the preseason then any of our current left wingers not named Perron.

Well, other than this game the pre season was a success, lets just pretend this didn't happen.

Well, Pretty brutal to lose like that to a AHL team. I hope it motivates the team to get going when it counts.

Trafalgar is probably over reacting a tad, but really, Smyth has no place on the 1st line. The sooner Eakens realizes that the better.
