While I get the desire to get Brouwer and/or Laich out of the top six, we have better candidates than Wilson to do so. Namely the team's 2nd leading goal scorer, Joel Ward. It's time we gave Chimera-Backstrom-Ward a shot, with top six minutes and a top six jersey color in practice.
I couldn't agree more unless giving Chimera the 2LW spot pushes Fehr out of the Top 6.

Backstrom passed the eye test, offensively, better than Wilson currently is. Wilson has also seen time with Laich, Erat, and Fehr on the 4th line at various points, and he looked no better offensively. Last night's power move to a soft backhand shot was about as good an offensive play as we've seen Wilson provide all year, and those moments are very few and very far between and this one relied on Braun mis-judging the situation. So far he's shown he can hit and he can fight, but we haven't seen anything else from him.

I agree. Backstrom absolutely passed the eye test of a skilled centerman and was a poor example, but I was more talking production. See my last post for explanation. Wilson is a power forward and will never look flashy. Therefore it is hard for him to have flashes especially in so few minutes.

Oates did the unthinkable and moved Fehr to left wing, and built a top line of 3 shoot first players. They did fine.

Hockey often defies logic. Its easier to just try things than come up with every possible reason to not try it, and instead live with failure. It only takes about 30 seconds to try.

Wilson playing with grinders has to show an offensive skill not yet developed, so he doesn't deserve more TOI. Yet we spent a first rounder on him.

Erat cannot score yet will never get a game in his natural position.

Meanwhile, the leaders are mired in mediocrity (at best), and can seemingly do no wrong to warrant a demotion, opening a door to give others a chance.

Giving Wilson a shot would be for developmental reasons, not for merit.

And how on Earth is he supposed to show anything in 6 minutes per night?

We're not seeing Wilson bulldoze his way into the crease to camp out for greasy goals and deflections. We're not seeing him win corner battles and get a controlled cycle started. Even if these plays wouldn't convert often with Beagle and Volpatti, it'd be nice to see him start executing them with his current linemates, rather than simply playing "hunter-seeker missle" and running towards whatever opponent has the puck.

We spent a first rounder on Boyd Gordon. 1st rounder doesn't always mean offensive-type forward. I can totally see McPhee thinking he's a career middle-6 winger. Top-6 if the stars align. I think his grit, physicality and attitude were what attracted McPhee, not his Jr scoring prowess or lack thereof.

I was hoping we would at least see a Saad type of impact from Willy. McPhee is on drugs. Or he has some creepy like to ruin prospects fantasy.

Yeah. Wilson should have to earn his chances in the top 6 like Johansson did.

Everyone should have to earn there minutes. I feel bad for anyone on the team who gets less minutes then Brouwer and Laich.

This series has been so odd in the regular season recently.

We owned them for a 2-3 year period before they've started their run of dominance.

A win would be cool but a beat down is more likely.

Leblond can't even fight in the AHL idk what he's trying to stir up. 5 bucks says he runs away from Erskine and goes after Wilson. Guy wouldn't fight Rechlicz earlier in the year until Recker finally got under his skin enough and finished him off again.

Always good to hear from true HB fan. I also thought if Pier is on the ice at the same time as Ovechkin it might not end well for the Flower.

Here's how it's gonna play out, IMO.

Erat stays in the pressbox/is here for some sort of injury insurance, unless some other GM thinks he can change him for whatever reason. Or we eventually buy him out over the summer. We get nothing back, essentially.

Wilson stays in the bottom pairing until Brouwer/Laich/Ward leave. He is not being groomed for a top 6 role, as no one currently in the org with the exception of a scout, maybe, sees him breaking into the top 6. The only way he sees top 6 time is by a fluke run of injuries, and even then, I don't see him showing any signs of offensive brilliance, regardless of linemates.

Neuvirth is getting starts in hopes of someone wanting to shake things up in net, and taking a chance on a guy who wants top minutes(see EDM with the Scrivens trade), and in return we get a late round pick or low end prospect.

If anyone thinks the moves that GMGM has made since 09 have been beneficial, outside of signing Ribs or Grabs to short deals, you are simply wrong.

Caps will lose and I will continue to ask myself the same question of "Why have I followed this team for 20 years?".

This team can't, won't win anything given the way it is now constructed. They are not one move away, more like a team away from being capable of winning a championship.

I wish we had a GM like Shero because he is able to constantly be creative and figure out how to ice a good team.

Line construction is funny. Posters will argue we cannot separate Chimera and Ward yet have no problem complaining that our top 2 lines suck.

I think Ward at 1LW or 1RW is a no brainer to try. Fits the mold of a Knuble and does the dirty work and goes to the net.

Ovi did get lots of rushes at LW as JoeB so astutely noted last game

A new look

Ovi Grabs Ward
Laich Nick Fehr
Chimera MJ Wilson
Patti Beags Brouwer
