Eyesight makes a bad eyewitness as everyone sees what they want to see.

That stats don't lie when used correctly to help determine what they were gathered for in the first place.

Someone said in another thread the Leafs are 30-1 to win the Cup tied with every other team in the NHL so who gives a crap about any other stat.

Eyesight makes a bad eyewitness as everyone sees what they want to see.

Unfortunately in the large majority of discussions involving advanced stats, they end up being abused by people who don't know how to use them, to support what they want to see.

(For the record, I believe there's a lot of value in the correct application of these stats, when seen in the right context. I just end up pretty allergic for both the traditionalist "Everything which is relevant is visible on the ice with the eye test" approach, as well as the "advanced stat fanatics without context" who tend to worship context-less application Corsi and PDO and assert that all stats will behave and evolve based on their preconceived notions.)

How quickly those positive vibes can change. The Leafs were on a percentage-fueled run, going 10-1-1, but then lost three straight, getting outscored 15-5, and they have just kicked off a brutal road trip that could break their season if they don't tighten up their game.

Key Injuries: LW Leo Komarov (concussion).

S.A. Corsi 44.7 - 4th. worst

And if that general idea isn't amusing enough, consider that there would have to be 31 teams in the league for that number to be accurate. ;)

Some of you guys need to read the posts from the first page of this thread. A lot of complaints that the Leafs was to low then (a year ago), that the Rangers, Habs and LA Kings was to high. And what happened then? Leafs dropped, Rangers, Habs and LA made it to the last 4 in the Stanley Cup finals.

Power rankings are what they are but they are not completely made up based on opinions alone.

That is why despite our stretch a good to great games there is still some concerns about for how long we can keep it up. Unless we learnt the lesson from previous seasons we will keep repeating the same mistakes. I dont see an epic collapse like previously on the horizon but that does not mean I am not worried.

No reason to not enjoy the good games however and hope the team, even is ever so slowly, correct what is wrong and becomes even better.

Its all about managing expectations. If you expect this team to get a wildcard spot and give the fans a good effort first round exit or possibly a first round upset then maybe you will be satisfied. If you expect them to be playing in the EC final or higher then you will most certainly be greatly disappointed. Of course, you may expect them to finish just out of the playoffs, which is highly probable with the history of this core of players.
