So if we send Ladd down you telling me we won't get like a 1M cap savings since he is not part of the NHL roster?
Maybe this illustration will help:
Salary cap is $81.5m:
(1) Team A has a roster with a combined cap hit of $80.5m. Being $1m under the $81.5m cap the team has $1m in Payroll Room that can accrue over the season. If Team A makes no other roster cap changes then as the season progresses the team can acquire:
- Day 1 of regular season: contract with a $1m AAV
- Halfway through the regular season: contract with a $2m AAV
- Trade deadline: contract with ~$4.5m AAV
(2) Team B has a roster with a combined cap hit of $86.5m. Including a $6m AAV player going on LTIR (nominal $80.5m cap with the player on LTIR), leaving the team with $1m in available LTIR relief. After placing the player on LTIR and if no other roster changes are made then as the season progresses the team can acquire:
- Day 1 of the regular season: contract with a $1m AAV
- Halfway through the regular season: contract with a $1m AAV
- Trade deadline: contract with a $1m AAV
The Isles are Team B if Boychuk is on LTIR.
Unused LTIR relief space does not accumulate.
Sending Ladd down frees up ~$1m AAV of LTIR relief. Whether Ladd is assigned on Day 1, halfway through the season, the trade deadline, or bounced up and down every other day of the season--the Isles can still only add ~$1m AAV in contracts to replace Ladd regardless of when those replacement contracts are added.
