Unfortunately MHG is still run by the same people as before :(

Ron Cain is essentially the one who financed the MHG work (who also owns a majority stake in the Pirates). Even if the team moved and he sold his portion, he makes out with a rink with some critically needed upgrades.
I'm not sure the upgrades to MHG are financially feasible just to house the Jr. Pirates & Scarborough HS. Assuming he wants to sell, a lot of what Cain has done has been based on expanding the Pirates brand. As a noted... It's a driver for his other hockey ventures.

Oh no doubt his Pirates stuff was the motivation. The Pirates had been looking to get out of PIA for a while, and it was a great opportunity for Cain to give them a practice facility that was rolled into his other ventures. But if the Pirates left, he could still have a juniors team and a full parking lot every weekend. Hell, Scarborough is gonna have to play some home games elsewhere as it is.

Steve Solloway: The faceoff that's leaving fans in the cold

To quote:
Flush it. Quebec City wants an NHL franchise. Petrovek could move the Pirates there, prime the pump and perhaps be part of an NHL expansion. Good for him."

Now, doesn't this sound just like IceArizona 'squeezing' the CoG,
where all the CoG will be getting is the rind and not the juice? :naughty:

Wait a minute... Did I read that correctly? Quebec City longs for a NHL team, targets the Coyotes, misses due to the recent events, has a stadium on standby and one under construction. They can get the Coyotes farm team for 4-5 years, then upgrade to the Coyotes if the $50M losses in 5 years scenario comes to pass? Pro sports work in strange ways. Sounds like a long, roundabout detour to get where they wanted (or the backdoor in. To paraphrase Bizarro Gosbee "Is there another way in?" ).

You read it correctly but missed the point.

The entire thrust of the piece is that the author thinks it's time for Petrovek and the Pirates to hit the road.

To summarize:

Basically, the relationship between the Pirates and the CCCC is so toxic that it's time for a change. One asset, the Pirates, is movable - the other, the CCCC, is not.

The entertainment value of Pirates hockey has been drastically diminished as Petrovek has cut and cut and cut from the budget to make the team's finances fit in the modern AHL. It's not entertaining to casual fans.

I’m going to agree with the story’s premise that it’s become personal between both Neal Pratt and Brian Petrovek. These guys are as much about ego as anything else.

I disagree, however, about sending the team on its way and acquire another AHL franchise. That’s a dangerous point of view for the Civic Center to take because it’s not like there many franchises out there to begin with, and its assuming that Petrovek and Co. will sell, which I’m not so sure they’ll do.

Should the Pirates lose this case – which I think they will after reading the complaint – I believe this will play out one of two ways. The judge will throw out the case and tell them to work it out. They’ll have a cooling off period and get a deal done by Jan. In the meantime, the Pirates will play in Lewiston for this season. The alternative is the team will suck it up, play in Lewiston for two years and ownership will dust off plans to build a new arena in Saco off I-95 near its practice facility.

Playing in Lewiston is not the financial disaster that everyone is making it out to be… Those who say it’s a money loser do not understand the relationship between ownership and the Colisee and do not understand the business model the Pirates operate under, which relies on an average crowd of 3,250 per game. Also, should the Pirates have to play in Lewiston for any period of time we’ll see renovations to make the team’s stay at the Colisee more pleasant.

This is playing into Petro’s ego because he’ll move the team to Lewiston, and build a new facility – with Ron Cain’s financial backing – out of spite toward the CCCC. He’ll essentially control the entire hockey market in the state with the exception of the Black Bears two games per year.

As long as the Pirates are in Lewiston or Saco, the CCCC won’t be able to get another AHL franchise because of the 50 mile radius. An ECHL won’t work because of the cost of overhead to run the team i.e. paying hockey staff including players. Also, the ECHL & AHL have had an unwritten gentlemen’s agreement about not invading each other’s territory. Note: Elmira is outside of Binghamton’s territory.

SPHL & CHL are not options… FHL? Are they still around? Junior hockey… Ron Cain owns the territory for USA Hockey so that’s not happening. QMJHL? Ask Lewiston how that went.

Indoor Football won’t work because the ceiling is too low. That leaves indoor lacrosse or indoor football.

None of those options would attract the business/fan support that an AHL team will bring.

Are we living in a parallel universe?

Because these are the same arguments we had in Glendale, AZ with the IceArizona arena management agreement... :shakehead

To quote:

"It would take only 15 to 20 music concerts a year for the Cumberland County Civic Center to make up any revenue shortfall associated with losing the Portland Pirates, according to a recent financial analysis.

The study estimated proceeds from concessions at $37,800 for each concert, minus costs of $22,680, leaving a profit of $15,120.

While the study did not specify the average concessions revenue for a Pirates game, it said Pirates fans don't spend as much as people at concerts."

That study is so full of ........ It was a bunch of promises to sucker people into voting yes at the ballot box. If there is a way of posting PDF's that I have saved on my hard drive I'd post the study so you can all read it and get a good chuckle.

What I find amusing is how the CCCC is going to double, or triple its concert count, when you have the new Bangor Arena and Bangor Waterfront to the north & Manchester's Verizon Wireless Arena and Bank of New Hampshire Pavilion Arena to the south.

They're drinking the Kool-Aid for sure.

The CCCC filed its brief today in response to the Pirates lawsuit.... It was nearly 500 pages including exhibits which contained a binder of emails about two inches thick. There is a settlement hearing schedule for tomorrow morning at Superior Court. It will be heard by Chief Justice Thomas Humphrey.

'Real possibility' Portland Pirates could lose NHL affiliate, owner says

To quote:

"In an affidavit filed with the Pirates lawsuit, managing owner Brian Petrovek said that the dispute over the lease “seriously harms†the two team’s relationship and “there is a very real possibility that the Coyotes could terminate our relationship with them.â€

“Obviously, when we went to Portland it was to play in Portland,†Phoenix Coyotes assistant general manager Brad Treliving said Thursday."

Coyotes watching Pirates lease dispute closely
By Chris Roy Published: 12th September 2013

PORTLAND – The Portland Pirates are set to open its training camp in less than two weeks at MHG Ice Centre in Saco, but where the team will play its home games once renovations of the Cumberland County Civic Center are complete is still a concern for the National Hockey League parent club, Phoenix Coyotes.

'Real possibility' Portland Pirates could lose NHL affiliate

Sorry - an outsider peeking in here with a quick question: Is it too late for an affiliation to change this close to the opening of the 2013-14 season or would things change prior to the 2014-15 season? Where would they go at such short notice?

Yes. It's too late for an affiliation switch. Any switch would take place for the following season, but that would leave an NHL looking for an affiliate or sharing.

Behind civic center dispute, two tenacious personalities

To quote:

"Petrovek, the fiery, intense managing owner of the American Hockey League team, is suing the civic center trustees to enforce the terms of an April agreement on the basic terms for a five-year lease to play in the newly renovated arena -- a goal of the team since the current owners bought the franchise 13 years ago.

If they cannot reach an agreement on how to split revenues and expenses, Petrovek has indicated the team could leave Portland altogether.

Pratt, a buttoned-down corporate lawyer, scoffs at the lawsuit, suggesting it's ridiculous to expect a court will uphold as valid a lease outline that has not been signed by either party."

If Pirates, civic center in talks, it's big secret

To quote:

"If officials of the Cumberland County Civic Center and the Portland Pirates are negotiating a lease agreement, they're doing all of their talking at the table.

After Tuesday's meeting, board Chairman Neal Pratt said he was bound by the executive session and an order from Superior Court Justice Thomas Humphrey not to discuss the case.

"The judge made it very clear that it's all confidential," Pratt said."

Hope things go well, but can't imagine that being forced to announce a new locale for their season this late will be good for their bottom line.
