12 of 14 are first round picks, and 9 of 14 are in the top 3 overall.

Sounds like a team that needs to score more goals should be hoping for a very high draft pick.

We have enough goal-scorers imo, that's my point. Larkin is equal with Tavares/Kucherov/Toffoli/Gaudreau/Marchand from last 2 seasons.

I think Svechnikov could be another one.

But we don't have world-class playmaker like Datsyuk or Zetterberg are. That's one reason why our PP is sucking. That's what we have to draft at this summer.

Hischier, Andersson, Necas kind of guys.

I think our future PP point will be fine with Saarijärvi.

But AA strikes me as the guy who, if he were playing basketball, would be a phenomenal sixth man, but would struggle as a starter. As long as he gets limited and/or sheltered minutes, he produces well, but I don't (yet) see him even approaching top line production in an expanded role.

Agree to disagree, I guess, but I really think they need one more scoring forward.

We can draft top 6 wingers. I have little doubt of that. Nyquist, Tatar, Franzen, Hudler, Mantha, Fleischmann, Abdelkader, AA (will be IMO)... the list goes on.

We need a #1 center and a #1 defenseman though. Those are much harder.

It's almost like maybe AA shouldn't be playing on the 4th line with players that provide 0 offense. Or something.

What's impressed me is that he's doing well even in the road. With tougher matchups.

Wants to score even if games are out of reach.

henkka, what are mantha's scoring chance stats looking like?

by my eye-test, his goal-scoring isn't completely fluke, he also generates chances very well. not quite as much as he's scoring but still very well.

I haven't updated them from latest games, but on the last check he was the best after Vanek. He creates quality chances 2nd most (both shots and assists for chances) and buries them with a best percentage.

That's a real deal for me. He had a samall slump 10 games ago, but latest games, absolutely great. That size with a hand-eye is just an advantage which will never go away.

I know you weren't asking me, but kind of related, his xGF/60 (expected goals for) is 2nd best on the team (behind Vanek).

xGF takes into account shot type, distance, angle, rebounds, rush shots, and PP or ES to determine how high quality of a shot it is.

Matches quite well with my own eye-test.

Usually some players will get lucky bounces, which inflates the goal amounts, but I don't remember any in Mantha's case.

3rd in goals for rookies. 4th highest PPG among rookies as well. If he would have started the season on the Wings, he could have challenged for top three in rookie scoring.

Hard to know, we saw with Nyquist what a difference it can be to come into the NHL with a strong confidence from being on a scoring tear in the AHL. Also it's easier for a young player to have the stamina for 50-60 NHL games as opposed to doing 82 right away.

Will be really interesting to see how he holds up in the next few months. A few rookies always slow down in the 2nd half, hopefully Mantha isn't one of them.

Has anyone else noticed Mantha's production has started to slip right around the same time Nyquist replaced Tatar on that line, or is it just me?

I noticed that his production started to slip when he stopped moving his feet and started to float a lot.

I think there's a lot of confirmation bias going on with Mantha. He's not been doing anything really different. If you watch him out there he's usually in the right position, backchecking, forechecking, making smart plays. That line started to spend much less time in the o-zone when Tatar was swapped for Nyquist though. Not surprising since Tatar has heated up and drives possession, while Gus is cold and kills possession.

Ya I noticed this. Not really sure why Blashill made that switch in the first place. I guess it was to attempt to spark Nyquist's offense, which he has. I would go back to the Tatar-z-Mantha line though. Usually when I want Blashill to do something, the exact opposite takes places though.

So expect Mantha to play 9 minutes per night on the 4th line for a little while. Why? Riley needs a goal of course! More minutes for No Goals!
