Bournival has not been our best player, Carey Price has been.

If he's good, we win. If he is even slightly off, we don't.

He's got what, a .940 save % right now? Ridiculous.

Gallagher has been great, Eller has been great, Galchenyuk is amazing, even though I think he can do more!

It's an exciting time to be a habs fan. I'm happy Bournival has taken advantage of his opportunity but I wouldn't call him the best performer thus far.

Subban has been brilliant as well.

Based on expectations Briere is a 10/10.

I did not expect anything from him and he has delivered.

Guys, we hired Briere for the playoffs. He goes into "beastiality mode" during the post season so give him some time.

As far as DD, hes the only option we have for our third line center. We are not demoting Eller or Galch to center a different line..

Even if were to buyout DD after this year, his cap would be a part contribution to Subban's raise, so think of him as a "bonus player" that we have right now (since Subban's cap is a steal)

Wow, confirmation bias at work.

What possible expectations could you have had for Brian Gionta that his excellent two-way play would warrant a 6/10, third worst among forwards???

I don't think you mean "beastiality"

At least I hope you don't.

Is beastiality mode reserved for when we play a team like the Penguins or Bruins?

Subban and Price have been as good as you could ask. Bournival has been impressive and the EGG line has been very consistent.
I'd say PK has been our best player.
PK is excellent. So far he and Price have led the way. Who's been better? Well, would you prefer filet or ribeye?

My list is based on reasonable expectations for each player. If they've exceeded them I'll give them a 8 to 10, 7 being average, anything below being various levels of dissatisfaction.

Forwards:

MICHAEL BOURNIVAL 10/10
LARS ELLER 8/10 (Would've been 10 if he kept it up)
BRENDAN GALLAGHER 8/10
TOMAS PLEKANEC 8/10
ALEX GALCHENYUK 9/10 (Playing better than points suggest imo)
BRANDON PRUST 8/10
TRAVIS MOEN 7.5/10 (Expectations were quite low)
MAX PACIORETTY 7/10
RYAN WHITE 7/10
RENE BOURQUE 7/10
BRIAN GIONTA 7/10
DAVID DESHARNAIS 2/10 (He's awful, can't win a puck battle for his life and has been borderline useless offensively)
DANIEL BRIERE 5/10 (I actually liked parts of his game before he got injured, but he had the unfortunate reality of being played with Desharnais a lot and also being on a new team. Before I give him a 2-3 I'll need to see him play more. Behind the net I found his presence was actually much needed but he didn't get anything going yet)

Defensemen:

P.K. SUBBAN 9/10 (Expected him to produce every game and rarely be a liability, the last few games it seems like he has the flu. Expectations for this kid are super high though)
ANDREI MARKOV 9/10 (Expected him to be a bigger liability, but he's been much better on the defensive end this year, playing huge #1 minutes too)
FRANCIS BOUILLON 7/10 (He's old the decline was expected)
RAPHAEL DIAZ 7/10 (Had low expectations and he's meeting them)
JOSH GORGES 5/10 (What happened to this guy? He's become a liability at times)
JARED TINORDI 6/10 (Expected better, he had a better preseason than season by far, wasn't hitting much at all in the season and wasn't great defensively)
NATHAN BEAULIEU 7.5/10 (Yesterday he showed what he can do, and since I expected there to be growing pains defensively, he meets expectations and even slightly exceeds them by producing yesterday, 10 more games and we'll see where he lands)

Goalies:

CAREY PRICE 10/10 (Expectations were he'd be good, but he's been great. He's been keeping us in games we often don't deserve to be in. His record isn't representative of how he's played, he should be more like 7-2~ the way he's played)
PETER BUDAJ 7/10 (Has been good for a backup, which meets expectations for me)

What are we grading?

Overall contribution (A=Essential, B=Important, C=Average, D=Light/situational, E=insignificant). That's a similar exercice to EA sport rating. Examples :

A
Subban
Price

B
Plekanec
Markov
Eller

C
Bourque
Gionta

D
White

E
Tinordi

Overall contribution vs expectation/talent level/role (A=Eagle, B=Birdie, C=Par, D=Bogey, E=David Desharnais). This is more fair to different kinds of players but highly subjective. Examples :

Eagle
Bournival

Birdie
Subban

Par
Gionta

Bogey
Gorges

David Desharnais
David Desharnais

I'm really happy Plekanec has picked up his play after a bad start. There isn't many players besides Desharnais that I'm upset by

I'd say Beaulieu has done very well for a 20 year old rookie d-man, there have been some gaffes in his own end. Most notably the one which resulted in a 2 on 1 yesterday but it was to be expected. You can see that sometimes he's out of position in his own end but he hasn't looked bad defensively. Even sometimes you can see him making up for some mistakes that Bouillon has done, like yesterday when Bouillon deflected a puck in our own zone and Beaulieu used his speed to cut off Cogliano and regain posession. I think this guy will be a solid #2 for us, if he keeps developping at this pace we're going to have one very good d-man in our hands. His first pass to break out of the zone is simply amazing.

If we make it all the way, I hope we meet the Sharks in the SC finals!

- Eller started off strong but has cooled off in the last couple days. He's not involved in the play as much as he was in the first 5 games but that's partly due to facing tougher competition.
- Desharnais would have been a 5 if he didn't start playing better ever since being part of a line with Moen/Prust and Bourque. I like how he's playing and he can be a solid asset to have to play against teams that are not overly physical (Carolina, Buffalo, Winnipeg, etc.)
- Plekanec gets a 7.5, he played his best game both offensively and defensively last night and I hope that means he's gonna get going because despite a fair amount of points after 10 games (9 pts) he hasn't been himself in the defensive aspect of things.
- Prust and Moen get good grades for being solid soldiers that we can count on to defend teammates or for defensive missions. Moen is playing like the Moen of 10-12 instead of the Moen of last year.
- Subban hasn't been at his best in the last week but due to his crazy stretch starting from the Calgary game I have no choice giving him a 9.
- Markov has been solid aside from the first game of the year. He's playing better than he was last year when he was paired with Emelin. Just a solid cerebral game. Seems to have adapted his game to his current speed unlike last year where he kept being overaggressive with the pinches.
- Diaz has had 4 good games and 6 bad ones, the less he faces physical forwards the better.
- Galchenyk showed his vision and his dirty hands in the first 5 games but right now he's in a bad stretch where he has to simplify his game. He can't just dangle his way through the opposing team 24/7.
- Price has been solid every game except for the Toronto one and the Edmonton game. Our record wouldn't be as good if it wasn't for him.
- Tinordi disappointed me with his positioning after a solid showing in pre-season. Beaulieu has been playing better every game, let's give him a shot until Murray/Emelin come back.
- Bournival, was never a big believer of him but he's impressing me with his hustle and his vision of the game. Solid bottom 6 player we have for the future.
