Have you seen him? He's really solid defensively, very steady. The whole Rangers team is having a rough start and considering no training camp and the strike its not all that surprising.

Not as dynamic or flashy offensively as Subban but certainly has the goods to be a number one.

McDonagh is clearly a notch below the rest of the team though. I mean I have no doubt he will turn it around, but he's been pretty bad. Producing absolutely zero offensively, not holding his own in his own end. He is playing rather poorly, well below last year's level, which even then was certainly not number 1 quality, but definitely top 4.

Not sure about #1 but he is a top 4 on any team, moreso a #3-4. We could have used him big time the last 2 years.

Thus far this year he is worse than Bouillon and Kaberle. Granted it has only been 4-5 games and that will obviously change, but he has been dreadful, and 2 years ago was when he first broke into the league. He does not have the offensive upside to ever be a number 1, and if his defence does not rebound to last year's level he is not even a top 4.

Weren´t the Habs one game above .500 last year when Martin was fired?
I really doubt Gauthier sacked him with the intention of tanking after 33 games, especially after swapping Spacek for Kaberle just a week prior.
To his credit though, he did make som solid moves after that getting some 2nd rounders.

Time to put this thread into perspective after tonight.........

Gauthier knows talent when he sees it.

Too bad he did not know how to sign talent.

Not a big fan of Budaj but check out who he shared the net with and his stats.

meh, if not Budaj, next backup will be similar, can't expect much from goalies who arent talented enough to be #1 and who also happen to play 20 games or less per season.

I hope we don't get a "Budaj sucks" movement going. He is one of the better back ups in the NHL, last night was his 1st game of the year, 1st game of competitive hockey since April. 2 of the goals he gave up he had no chance at all(off Emelin and lucky bounce right to Alfredsson), the 1st and 4th would have been huge game cahnying saves. The 5th I'm sure he'd like to have back.

Last year he had strong numbers on a 28th place team(2.55 GAA .913%).

Any goaltender with realistic hopes of becoming even a somewhat regular starter will avoid Montreal like the plague. When you have a workhorse like Price in net you know the backup will not be seeing much playing time. We are basically resigned to taking failed starters as a backup just because they still prefer a north american paycheque to going to europe.

Maybe we should go aftera Euro FA or late rounder like Nashville/San Jose Minny and Anaheim had luck with.
