Glendale City Council Meeting - Nov 13, 2012
(40:15)

Taxpayer Ken Jones: This item as its been discussed, is going to layoff more city workers. We used to be known as a friendly and kind town. Layoffs have destroyed that image and it is still going on and it is still being planned. We know that one of your managers, Erik Strunk, has been trying to negotiate a way to privatize our libraries and layoff 57 city workers. We have had enough. When we hurt employees we hurt our city. They live here, they pay taxes here, they pay water bills here, they have families that are attending our schools... yet this council seems to be ready to take an ax and chop off all of them people to save 200 thousand dollars?... and you're up there wanting to give 320 million dollars to the Coyotes manager... a California guy... but you can sure cut up our people. Harvard University came out with a new word for the year. The word is... give me a minute.... "Omnishambles"... "Omnishambles"... Its going to be in the dictionary next year... It means "Gross Mismanagement". Look in the mirror. I hope that you will vote this down.... keep our own employees... and if you have to cut... Cut some of them million dollar salaries that are being paid to the Coyotes instead of giving them all of that money. Thank you.

There was me, that is Joyce, and my three droogs, that is Scruggsie, Tindall, and Skeeter, and we sat in the Korova Leasebar trying to make up our rassoodocks what to do with the evening. The Korova Leasebar sold lease-plus, leases plus vellocet or synthemesc or AMFs which is what we were drinking. This would sharpen you up and make you ready for a bit of the old ultra-budgeting.

Coming soon:

Don't forget Winona,

Too bad the City Manager doesn't get to vote. He has all the dollars mapped out and recommends that the CoG doesn't vote YES to sign the lease, yet there is a good chance the council will vote YES regardless.

Skeete IMO is also putting himself in the new Mayor's good books. He is showing that he is willing to have an opinion and not just tell the council what they want to hear.

Omnishambles - The word is compounded from the Latin prefix omni-, meaning "all", and the word shambles, meaning a situation of total disorder. The word refers to a situation which is seen as shambolic from all possible perspectives.

Perfect, just perfect.

Original use was in British television, here's the line.

Not only have you got a ****ing bent husband and a ****ing daughter that gets taken to school in a ****ing sedan chair, you're also ****ing mental. Jesus Christ, you're a ****ing omnishambles, that's what you are. You're like that coffee machine, you know: from bean to cup, you **** up.
—Malcolm Tucker (Capaldi) to Nicola Murray (Front), "Series 3, Episode 1", The Thick of It.[1]

I love that word, and have used it more than once since I heard it in this PHX omnishambolic affair.

Skeete's lack of support is a surprising twist. It will add uncertainty to the process going forward, and I think it will give Knaack and Martinez heartburn about the vote. It basically puts those two individuals way out on a limb as the only people responsible for any future staff and service cuts, and possible financial meltdowns. Incoming council members will blame it on the incumbents (Knaack and Martinez) for voting against the recommendation of the city manager. Their seats are getting rather warm, I would think.

Comments on Skeete's summary of the "Team Stays" vs "Team Goes" scenarios:

- Hey Horatio, you don't add an apostrophe when you pluralize a word. It's "Scenarios", not "Scenario's". Didn't they teach grammar at UofP?
- If you get rid of the team you have to cut $12 million from the general budget over the next 4 years, roughly 9% of expenses.
- If you keep the team you have to cut $20 million from the general budget over the next 4 years, roughly 15% of expenses. You end up roughly in the same place in 10 years.

Therefore, the basic net impact of the AMF agreement is essentially $8 million a year. The city is $8 million a year worse off with the team than without. Or, put another way, the COG is providing a subsidy in the AMF of $8 million a year. The revenue and cost savings from the lease deal are worth roughly $7 million a year, and they have agreed to pay $15 million, roughly twice the value they are getting.

How does that get past the gift clause?????

My personal conspiracy theory all along, which hasn't received a whole lot of creedance, is this dragging out by the NHL has to do with the votes they need to maintain the lockout. When I proposed this theory a few chapters ago it was brushed off, but now with the recent article about the "Jacobs 8" so to speak and the down right absurdity that continues to reveal itself in Glendale, I have no doubt my theory is correct. If the proverbial skeete hits the fan like it is about to, watch for a sudden change in the song and dance from owners. Players are waiting patiently for the results of this and I'm willing to bet if by some miracle that Phoenix stays, the players will cave.

I'm not sure I understand your theory. Why would Jamison vote differently than the NHL on lockout issues? Or are you suggesting that Jacobs and others are threatening Bettman by saying "if you don't end the lockout, we're not voting Jamison in"?

I'll pretend that this topic is actually an homage to 8-Bit Theater's invention of the word omniloathe...

Omniloathe
v: To find repugnant in all possible ways, conditions, and variances.
"All Communists omniloathe joy."

Which fits well here, as I omniloathe everything about the ongoing fiasco in Glendale. I'm honestly at the point where I don't care if they stay or go, I just want it over already.

Maybe in two weeks.

It more an issue if Jamison is Bettman strawman with no money and the team is all but relocated to Qc ASAP after the lockout. You think PKP would have dropped 240 million on the team last Summer and vote for cancelling the season now. So the NHL played a delaying game to stop a future owner from getting a vote too early for Gary liking. Also like I said before to announce the sale and relocation just after the lockout end would be a huge PR win for the NHL.

I don't really buy into the notion that the reason for the lockout has to do with Yotes, if that's what the above theory is trying to imply (I could have misread).

Though the prospect of a lockout perhaps pushed the COG vote on the last lease to June 8. Traditionally, the NHL makes the city jump through the hoops in May.

As long as the lockout continues there's no real urgency on the NHL's front. Glendale and toil and fumble through the lease all they want. IMO, next week's vote means nothing and as soon as the lockout is settled we'll see some real movement on this saga

The lockout is not caused by the Yotes but I could see the lockout having an effect on whatever or not to relocate last summer or next summer.

Or maybe.... just maybe...... Skeete wants wants to keep his job after the new year and is telling the incoming council what he thinks they want to hear. ;)

On a serious note tho.... I believe Skeete made that "non-recommendation" based upon the fact the sales tax increase sunsets in five years, and he can't assure the council where city finances will be then.

Cannot blame someone for not getting behind a long term obligation when your resources are unknown after a relatively short term.

I believe so.

Now if they could only convince Lieberman to come back from the surf and sun to vote, there wouldn't be a tie. :naughty: , but I'm thinking that's not likely. IIRC he has officially walked away.

he would have to be reappointed to the seat. Did he say why he bailed early?

Wouldn't the mayor's vote be included already in this scenario?

Either way, good question. My thought is if the votes ends in a tie, wouldn't it be considered rejected since if it's 3-3, there is no majority?

Or maybe he just doesn't think it's a good idea to plunge the city into austerity. Occam's Razor, anyone?

Doesn't the mayor then get to cast the deciding vote?

No.

Ordinance must receive a majority vote to be enacted. The mayor doesn't get a special tie-breaking vote. If it is 3-3, the ordinance doesn't carry and the city manager may not execute the agreement.

What I mean here is, the Coyotes vote is needed to maintain the lockout since they need 8 votes, this is why it's dragging on despite (inspite of ?) the absurdity.

The last thread title was great. Kind of hard to top it me thinks.

... are you kidding? Im thinkin kdb, who came up with the last thread title has just grown complacent with all that newfound power. Jaded, overly cynical & just downright lazy. Doesnt seem to understand like a lot of players he's only as good as his next shift, rift, chord structure & finger work. Dont care what you did in the past Pal. Whatre you doing for me right now? If Beatlesque, how about;
