If he gets $4 million he is higher paid than Gallagher. That's erroneous. If Eller, who is clearly a better player, signed long term at $3.5, that tells you the ceiling, unless Bergevin is on THC gummies, or LSD.

MB always overpays guys...always...can he get it right this time? 8.5M for 3 yrs should do it...no way his cap hit should be more than 3M

You're delusional my friend. And why sign him for only 3 years? What if he keeps improving?

Why not? He's a 40 point forward, the going rate for that is around 3.5/4M.

Lars Eller got 3.5M from Washington, that's a pretty decent comparison.

That's a lot for a guy who average 39.77 points every 82 games the last two seasons while playing mostly a top 6 role with good quality wingers

3.5-3.75 x 5 should be more than enough.

The cap keeps raising in 6 years 4th liners will probably get paid 4M, some of them are already near that price tag...

He belongs on the 3-4th lines...he will be lucky on a go forward to get 25-30pts he should not be making over 3M but it's Montreal, so he might get more...this is where our GM gets himself in trouble every time...

From M-A Godin's article in The Athletic:

Phillip Danault a le profil tout indiqué pour décrocher un contrat à long terme – The Athletic.png

I think it'll end up being something like 3.25 for 4 seasons, which is reasonable for a high end 3C.

Other comparables M-A Godin made in his articles include another 11 forwards, all role players, who were signed to 5 or more years.

I believe he's 2 years away from free agency. $2,75m for the next 2 years. Then $4m for 2 years & $3,75m for 2 years after that.

That's $21m over 6 years for a Cap Hit of $3,5m.

At most I'd give him $24m over 6 years which is a Cap Hit of $4m. That's my absolute maximum for him.

Even if it's 5 or 6 seasons at that cap hit, it would be good.

As long as it's 3.5 or less i don't care much about the number or years. 3.5 millions for a solid 3rd line center is fine. Securing the 3rd line center role for many years while not overpaying is not a bad idea at all.

But if he wants 4 millions that's 3 years maximum. Now some posters will say it's just 500 000. Yeah i know. Shaw is just 500 000. Alzner is just 500 000. Schlemko is just 500 000. But if you keep paying depth players 500 000 more than you should it adds up and eventually it cost you the difference between the ability to overpay a star or having to let him go.

No one cares
I like Phillip Danault but most of you are missing something with him, you all see him as a third line center and that is actually what he is but how does Bergevin see him? He said he was a replacement for Eller but he has played on our first line since those comments were made, this could be bad.

We paid another player, a hell of alot more, for less production, with even more icetime than Danault had.
