In case anyone noticed, an amateur is leading the Am Ex by 3 shots. An amateur hasnt won on the Tour in 33 years.

Not just any amateur either. Nick Dunlap is ranked 3 in the world, and the reigning US Am champion (prior US Junior Am winner also).

Almost shooting a 59 as an amateur is giving Cantlay vibes. A 4 shot lead under that sort of pressure is must-watch tomorrow, though it'll probably be fewer than 4 by day's end.

Tied between Burns and Dunlap with two to go. Burns has played better today. Dunlap has been wobbling, yet is hanging in there, especially because Burns has played good yet didn't run away with it when he could've. I'm giving the edge to Burns for obvious reasons, but this could still go Dunlap's way without a doubt.

Edit: Seconds after I say that Burns hits it in the water on 17. Big edge for Dunlap now.

That was crazy.

I think he has to turn pro, no? You're into basically every big event in golf this year, and you've already shown you can win at this level. This isn't one of the biggest events, but he beat a top level golfer to win this tournament.

I guess he could decide to wait because he's still exempt for another few years on the PGA Tour with that win. Maybe he's got other things to consider.

Always good to hear Jim Nantz calling pga tour golf again

Also good to see only 4 guys double digit under par at Torrey

Pretty exciting finish at Torrey

Pavon looked like he blew it big time. 3 putted 17 and then layed up into the deep rough on 18 out of fairway bunker, but somehow controlled the ball out there and got it to stop and stuck it close and birdied.

It's hard to avoid how that last few holes looked like something from his countryman Van De Velde, but the difference is Pavon saved it at the end. First Frenchman to win on the PGA Tour too.

Weird seeing the DP World Tour guys now regulars in the mix at these events. This was another great story too, even if different from Dunlap. Pavon is a nobody in golf terms. 31 years old and ranked 78 in the world. By far the biggest win of his career, but there are now going to be some of these DP World Tour guys create a bigger name for themselves.

I don't really like Torrey Pines, but great views and you're right definitely an exciting finish.

Hatton and Caleb Surratt to LIV.

I get the appeal of LIV to the pros.

What I don't understand is when someone like Surratt leaves college to take the LIV money. It can't even be that much money. He's screwed his career. He's the same age and been equal to Dunlap for years (Surratt won SEC ROY), and essentially has only been on a little bit less of a heater in the last six months. Why wouldn't you bet on yourself to be on the PGA Tour in the next few years? It seems so stupid. You probably aren't ready for pro golf, you are potentially putting yourself in a hole with ever playing on the PGA Tour, it might be that much more difficult to come back because you aren't an established LIV guy with real prestige like Rahm or DJ, and you don't have access to the biggest events in golf.

It comes off as you don't trust yourself to make a good career out of the sport.

Guaranteed money.

Even if you suck absolute balls all year on LIV, you're going to make a lot of money. College players have flamed out 100's of times over trying to make it on the PGA.

That, and the fact that LIV and the PGA are going to become one here sometime soon and they will be eligible to play on both. Why not get the bag.

It’s probably like a few million guaranteed. We also don’t know what the path back will look like. For someone who isn’t Rahm or DJ, you may have a long road back, and the PGA Tour U spot he might’ve gotten will be gone.

True, but a guaranteed few million is still pretty nice lol. Might be worth it.

Im watching coverage on ESPN+....conditions are so soft that Mcilroy almost lost a drive in the fairway at spyglass

ball embedded totally below the surface. took them a couple minutes to find it

Here's the drive...also what a line to take off the tee.

Nick Dunlap in last place after his first round as a pro.

There may be an adjustment period in order. I'm sure he'll figure it out, but this isn't too surprising.

Do you think any of the top golfers wouldn't sell out to LIV if they gave them a ridiculous offer?

Watching Rahm's first LIV start (seen bits and pieces) makes me really cynical that literally all these guys care about is money. He could be playing Pebble right now and is instead playing some third rate resort course in Mexico with a half serious field and half a field of gimmicks.

They're saying that the LIV broadcast has gotten better, so I'll have to check it out when I have a chance. But Mayakoba definitely isn't a championship level course, going back to when the PGA Tour had it.

I wish they'd get their shit together and actually provide some amount of stats that go beyond driving distance, but whatever. So far, it doesn't look like they're trying to build a product designed for that type of fan. Only 7.5k watching right now on Youtube.
