Without free agents/Hanifin/Trades next year looks like this

Reilly-Polak
Gardiner-Percy
Robidas-Granberg

We could also get Killington. He's pretty good but Hanifin would be a better fit. Do not forget Phaneuf though. Hopefully Rielly gets more pp time.

I think he can become a key player for us in shutdown role. Any one expecting him to put up points will be disappointed. He is a bottom 4 defenseman, most likely a 3rd pairing one who plays a lot on the PK.

Now team success should not be credited to one individual but he already has a pretty impressive list of accomplishments. Before he moved to Toronto he had already become SHL champion, JWC gold medalist and he even made the senior squad and won gold in the WC the following year. And he was not just there to watch and learn on any of those teams but played a significant role defensively.

I see him in a similar way as I view Biggs and Gauthier as forwards. They will not catch the big headlines or become star of the weeks, but they will be crucial in our success as defensive specialists.

??? - Gauthier - Biggs
??? - Granberg

He doesn't handle the puck very well and I don't think he ever will get much better with it but he's improved his skating by a mile since joining the Marlies. He's super strong and fearless when it comes to shot blocking.

Looks like a solid bottom pairing defender for now, which is fine by me. Cheap and effective for his role. If his puck handling can get better, he could be a Roman Polak type player for us moving forward. If it doesn't get better, he'll be Staffan Kronwall and back in Sweden in a few years. It's up to him.

I´m hoping he turns out to be more of a Tallinder kind of player. Solid, simple player you can count on in your own zone. He do need to be paired with some one more skilled with the puck. I do hope Percy develops into more then a 3rd pairing defenseman but if he doesnt, he could be a perfect fit for Granberg long term. They did very well last season as a pair.

Like I have said, bottom pairing potential and thats it
Percy carried him with the Marlies a lot of the time
Granberg is okay but we have much better people coming up.
Finn, Percy, Valiev, Loov, Nilsson

I agree, he has a good pedigree with his international play and has done well on big ice. Right now he is simply not letting the game come to him and is forcing the plays. I like his game and the way he is willing to pay the price. He will get better the longer he stays up. I see him as a very good 3rd pairing D man who will progress to a 2nd pair D man who can play against the physical opponents and do so very well.

People and this organization need to have patience with prospects, and understand that they aren't finished products. He has weaknesses... they all do. If he turns into a good #6, and is solid defensively, isn't that great? Don't we need a cost contained #6? If he turns into more, isn't that great too?

You know what is even better?

That we have this list of guys, who may, or may not turn into useful NHL'ers.

1. Matt Finn Pro 7.0 C
2. Stuart Percy Pro 7.0 C
3. Rinat Valiev CHL 7.0 C
4. Tom Nilsson Pro 6.5 C
5. Petter Granberg Pro 6.5 C
6. Viktor Loov Pro 6.5 C
7. Eric Knodel Pro 6.5 D
8. Cody Donaghey CHL 6.5 D
9. Andrew MacWilliam Pro 6.0 C

All we need to do is to have two or three of them turn into something useful, and we need to keep drafting, and keeping our picks to continuously fill this pipeline.

Just because the team success wasn't directly a product of his play, doesn't devalue it at all. In fact, I think the fact that he has been chosen to represent his country not just at the junior level, but at the WC too speaks highly of him. And of course, playing on a winning team can be good for a player's development.

Yup, I think ppl should be happy with the development system when you can turn 4th rd draft picks into NHL players.

Come to think of it, all 3 players I listed as potential key players for us as defensive specialists has won gold at the WJC while being their teams top defensive players, and for 3 different countries. That is a bit encouraging.

Now, defensive skills are the ones that takes the longest to develop so I am not saying I expect these guys performing for us any time soon. But if we are rebuilding we also need to shape long term role players as well. And Granberg, Biggs and Gauthier is that kind of role players you can have long term success with.

Edit: And great that Biggs have seen some time as a center for the Marlies. A defensive line should always have 2 players capable of taking draws.
