My fake ID name back in the day was Sebastian Caron. I heard he would go to beer league games and get into fights with people. Good guy.

If we are going to look to within the organization for a backup NHL goalie, Murray wins over Zatkoff, IMO.

One of the main reasons why the Pens had to play with 5 defenseman late in the year was because of Zatkoff sitting in the minors while taking up NHL Salary Cap space. That can't happen again this year. The Pens have to sink or swim with Zatkoff as the backup due to Zatkoff's one-way deal.

One more of the boneheaded Shero deals with scrub players. :shakehead

Zatkoff didn't take up any salary cap space last year. Nor would he if he were in WBS this year.

Affordable options in the $750 and under category are:

McElhinney 2.88/.914 12-14-2
Emery 3.06/.888 10-11-7
Ellis 2.35/.914 4-3-1
Zepp 2.89/.888 5-2-0
Lindback 3.71/.875 2-8-0 did much better with Buffalo though

All could be cheap and decent insurance polices for Zatkoff...even role with Zatkoff and have one of these guys as a number 3?

Zatkoff, while giving Murray and perhaps Jarry cups of coffee throughout the season. Fleury 60-65 games, Zatkoff 15 games, Murray/Jarry 2-7 games.

Exactly. A player in the AHL doesn't count against the cap if he makes anything less than the minimum + $375,000.

How can he make less than the minimum?

And I've never heard of this. Where in the CBA does it discuss circumventing the cap in such a manner?

It isn't "anything less than the minimum", it's anything less than (minimum + $375k). Which was stated in the post you quoted...

Or, to phrase it a different way, any cap hit less than $375k over the minimum league salary is ignored if the player is not in the NHL.

And this isn't circumventing the cap at all. It's a way of preventing cap circumvention, ala Wade Redden and his $6M/season salary being stuffed in the AHL prior to the current CBA.

Zatkoff will be the backup. Sure Murray had a tremendous year in the A but he needs to prove it again this year before he gets his chance. With the depth the Pens have at G I doubt that another free agent signing similar to Greiss will be attempted.
