I'm relieved by Nvidia's reasonable pricing on the 3080 and 3070 because it guarantees that AMD's cards will be more than reasonable. With the 3070 at $499, AMD's equivalent will probably be under $400, which is getting close to the most that I'm willing to spend. I thought that I might have to wait until the Spring for a 3060 equivalent, but, if I can actually afford the lowest entry in the initial wave of models that'll be available this year, I might just go for it.

Apparently these new GPUs had a mindblowing techdemo. Unfortunately I'm at work so I can't watch it.

As a relatively new PC builder/gamer, is there a reason to pick up one of the 3000 series cards if I'm only going to play in 1440p and don't plan on getting a 4k monitor for the next few years?

Yes, especially if you have a high Hz monitor. 1440p is still the best resolution for quality and high frames. This will allow you to push everything to the max for a few years without having to really worry.

Gotcha, thanks for the heads-up. I picked up one of those super popular ASUS 1440p 144Hz monitors when I built my PC this summer, so that is good to know.

I am really tempted to get that 3090. I held out on the 1080ti, I held out on the 2080ti.

The 3080 at that price is attractive to me as well.

The 3090 price is a bit ridiculous (unless actual in-game benchmarks say otherwise) but we should have expected that. The 3070 and 3080 on the other hand look to be well priced. Pretty sure I will pick up a 3080 once they are in stock in Canada.

Some extra info from the EVGA forums:

  • Currently no pre-order planned. Similarly, no pricing is available at this time.
  • Like the US store, we cannot generally comment on availability at this time for the EU store. Availability, however, will not be any sooner than the dates NVIDIA mentioned for each GPU.
  • HYBRID, HC, and KPE cards will come a bit later than the XC3 and FTW3 cards. No ETA to give you, which is probably your next question.
  • HYBRIDs will be 240mm, except for KPE HYBRID, whch will be 360mm. No plans for a 120mm HYBRID at this time.
  • HYBRIDs will be 2 Slot.
  • XC3 cards will all be 2.2 slots. Length is 11.23in. - 285.37mm / Height is 4.38in. - 111.15 mm.
  • FTW3 cards will be 2.75 slots. Length is 11.81in. - 300mm / Height is 5.38in. - 136.75mm.
  • There will be an EVGA NVLINK. No ETA at this time.
  • Since I've seen this mentioned incorrectly, all cards are 3 DisplayPort, 1 HDMI.
  • PowerLink is expected to work with the XC3 models. For obvious reasons, it will not work with the 3090/3080 FTW3 cards due to the number of PCIe power connectors. Either way, we will have the compatibility list updated when the cards are available on the website.
  • Step-Up will begin when cards are available. Products will not be listed prior to general availability. I would expect one of the XC3 models will be listed for availability, but we will make that decision prior to general availability.
  • I'm not sure why people assume bots are buying cards over regular people. It was a popular reason for why 20-Series cards were always out of stock, which completely ignored literal supply and demand issues (lots of people wanted them, but there weren't many initially). Yes, there are per person quantity caps for each card. Yes, we require captcha to login, which is also required to create a profile. This should help to comfort some of you.

Where the 3060 at tho
Check back in Q1 2021. XX60 cards are usually released 3-4 months after the flagship cards are.

If you're looking for similar performance to what a 3060 will give, wait for AMD to release RDNA2 GPUs or pick up a 2080 Super used or on sale after prices on them drop.

Ah, damn. Looks like I'll be waiting for the AMDs then. I need an upgrade before Cyberpunk. 2080 supers are probably still ridiculously overpriced especially here in Canada.

The 3090 and 3080 look like absolute beasts, but I gotta say....at the price point and power consumption target, the 3070 though....dang. I might have to get me one of those.

Waiting for Boxing Day for the 3080. Going to have to sell my 2070 Super now too. The 3090 just too much imo.
