Hoping he surprises us and comes back for a year or Detroit fights him on leaving.

If not, farewell to my favorite hockey player ever.

My favorite player besides Feds.

Sadly, his time is over. He simply just cannot play top six minutes any longer and it was evident his heart is broken up by this situation as well.

I wish him all the luck back home.

Cannot believe his Red Wing days are over.

Lost the most famous artist my state has ever produced and my favorite player since Fedorov from my favorite team left today. :(

This stinks. Datsyuk hasn't been held pointless in the playoffs since his sophomore year in 2003.

What a career, though. We were so lucky to get to see him dazzle on such a regular basis. It's going to be hard not seeing him out there.

Time flies. Seems like the Magic just came in the league yesterday. Thanks for the thrills Pavel.

Teared up watching him in the handshake line, words can’t describe how much he means to this sport and Red Wings fans

datsyuk is the most weirdly russian hockey player ive ever seen. no one else since the end of the cold war did a better job of revealing how cookie-cutter north american hockey players are. there are probably dozens more datsyuks in europe and russia who cant play in the nhl because they dont have datsyuk's judo ability to avoid dangerous hits. i hope the league keeps changing to be better for finesse players like him.

There were not many guys in the league who defended him 1 on 1 and did not look like a fool while trying it. The "Datsyuk Dangle" was just one facet of his overall amazing game.

Thank you, #13.

He was a great topic of debate amongst myself and friends. I still stand by saying he was the best in the world for 3-5 years there. Who else would score over a PPG, PK, take a defensive zone face-off in the last minute of a game? He did it all. This was a time when Crosby was just coming on but had pretty much zero defensive responsibility.

I loved being at the Joe and hearing the crowd buzz when Datsyuk had the puck. Electric is the word for it. How many players can consistently elicit that type of response?
