Maurice is blessed that he became the coach of the Whalers at the age of 28 (for funsies - 7 players on the 1995-1996 Hartford roster were older than he was) and was the youngest head coach in NHL history. It's taken him 1,163 games to reach the 500 win mark, or a winning percentage of 0.430. That's the lowest win percentage of any of the 20 coaches who's reached the 500 win mark. Also, while he may be the 2nd youngest, it's taken him 17 seasons to get there - that averages out to about 29 wins per season - also the lowest of any coach to have won 500 or more games. Exalting him for competency isn't exactly warranted here, IMO.

He has coached alot of teams with not alot of talent though along the way and coached his way to the Stanley Cup finals and conference finals in his career.

Regardless it's a great acheivement that should not be diminished. He is a great fit in Winnipeg and is just what this Jets team needed.

The guy is still young, if he coaches the next 12 seasons(unlikely unless he wins a couple cups) and averages 40 wins a season he will have over 1000 wins, the league average in wins last season was 41 and playoff teams averaged 47 wins

He could do it before the age of 60

Maurice got a big time raw deal here in TO. Was given complete **** and somehow made them overachieve into mediocrity. I mean, Scotty Bowman wouldn't win **** with those Leaf rosters.

It's not really close either.

Under Noel the team had no identity, the hockey being played was totally inconsistent and even more importantly the team didn't win much.

The opposite has been true under Maurice.
