I forget....

Was Saugus one of the naysayers or did he believe that Patty will end up being a HOF'er one day?

I recall Saugus being one of those that felt Patty needed 1000 points if he was going to make it, which at the time seemed to far off for him.

I don't think he said much about Patty's number getting retired. I don't remeber who was against it, but there were more then a few.

The whole argument was that it would water down the numbers already retired and be overkill. Tis was before Neids was put up there too. There was a call for just 3,4, and 30 and then closing the gates.

I don't believe in that as I think Neids belonged up there and so does Elias and it doesn't dimish anything.

5 great players who were the most influential players in team history. Even if the Devils side of history is young doesn't change how large those guys were/are.

It's still kind of crazy to think any Devils player has 1,000 points all with us. Think about how defense oriented we've been for 25 years. It's incredible actually. Well done Patty.

Patty on NHL Live:

Having [Oates] and [Stevens] back, they're hockey guys, they understand how individual players can fill in different situations," Elias said.

"Don't get me wrong. I loved working with Peter. He was a smart hockey coach and a smart guy that you could talk too, and he had a good relationship with the players.

With these guys what they changed was we're being more patient in the defensive zone and the neutral zone. I think that gives us more energy to go on offense and therefore create more opportunities."

Translation : While the "swarming" system was effective at times, doing it constantly ended up exhausting everyone and also left players out of position Defensively more often than not.

Wow. Translation - "I'm so happy to have Oates and Stevens here because unlike DeBoer, they are hockey guys. Oh wait, that sounds bad, let me backtrack to not throw DeBoer under the bus because he's a nice guy."

Yeah, Patty's quote is pretty damning, all the more so because I don't think he intends it to be.

Like the Marty "there's no strategy" quote during MacLean.

There's been a couple of those for Pete lately.

His interview after the Buffalo game kind of threw Deboer under the bus too. I guess Patty is the consummate professional because he never complained about Deboer before if he was this unhappy.

Elias is a true professional. Players complained on the ice by playing like absolute ass, but that's really a product of low moral and no confidence in the failed systems Deboer stubbornly held on to.
