Do you go to Bergeron now and talk about an extension?

Is the plan to go year to year?

Do you hope that he takes a pay cut? Offer him a one year extension at the same cap hit he’s making now?

He’s 36 and has suffered through nagging groin injuries during some extended playoff runs. Lots of mileage. There’s also the concussion history.

Nobody wants to think about the possibility of him playing elsewhere, right? It’s not like Bourque where he hasn’t won a ring, so that bodes well.

Ideally, Coyle grows into the #2 center role, Bergy becomes your defensive specialist, and you go out and find a #1, right?

I get we don’t want to talk about it, but it’s responsible organization and team building to plan.

I don’t have the quote handy, but I believe he said he was going to go year but year. Perhaps someone has it readily available

That's my recollection as well.

I'm not worried about the $$ on any future contracts for him. He's never been about the money, why start now?

I'd be very surprised if he ever went elsewhere like Chara did. I think being a career Bruin is important to him. As mentioned above, he already has a Cup so although I'm sure he'd love another one, I don't think he'd go chasing it with another team.

I doubt he'll sign an extension before the end of next season but :dunno:

The most charitable word I can think of to describe the planning for replacing Krejci is 'underwhelming', so it's imperative the Bruins do better in working out how to handle Bergeron and the 1C spot after this coming season.

At least in this case not even Sweeney can talk himself into believing that there is anybody else currently in the organization who can take on the 1C position, or that it can be part-filled by some cheapish addition like a Foligno. It's going to take more than that.

In the short term I think Bergy will retain the spot as long as he's able to. He's past his prime now, but he's still a damn good player and it just depends how long he can maintain his current level, or close to it, and how his body holds up. Depends of course on what Patrice wants to do, but I think my ideal scenario would be that he gets through the 21-22 season well, and then the Bruins will have a couple of options. The 2022 offseason is supposed to be relatively stacked with good top 6 center UFAs, so that's probably going to be their best opportunity to land a long-term guy to take the team into the next era. Then it just depends on whether Bergeron stays for another year in the top 6 and Coyle/Stud/whoever slots back down, or that's the point where Bergy drops to the 3rd line for whatever's left of his career.

In the meantime, if Bergy gets injured and is out for any significant length of time in the upcoming season, gee, things could get ugly for the Bruins fast. Not smart IMO to be so dependent on the fitness of a 36 year-old with as much mileage as Bergeron has, but here we are.

Bergeron, Bruins discussing contract extension

"Patrice and Kent Hughes, his representative, and I have had discussions about where Patrice is at," Sweeney said. "We'll keep those private as we do all the others and let him decide what path he wants to take. Obviously, it's a completely open door for how long Patrice wants to play the game for us and we'll leave it at that."

I like that they are open to keep Bergy for as long as he wants to play. Personally, the longer the better!

Bergy has never been one of those guys who claimed to want to play as long as possible. I think after this season, and every year thereafter, there is a high likelihood he retires.

How likely would you guys say that next season comes to be Patrice’s last?

He's got some cool statistical benchmarks on the horizon, 400 goals and a 1000 points. Not that he's chasing stats.

He was cheated out of two seasons between the lockout and the concussion, not to mention a recovery season.

Where does Bergeron fit on your all time Bruin greats? Stats + unbelievable player/person, I'm feeling like he's creeping up on Mt. Rushmore territory.

He could easily be over 1000 points by now if it weren't for all those lost seasons. Throw games missed due to Covid in there too.

I have a hard time ranking players, but anyone putting him on their Rushmore list would get no argument from me. Even if not top four, he's still very high for a team with almost 100 years of history, and that's impressive.

Mount Rushmore is kind of over with me

I guess it’s really best player in franchise history so that’s easy
Williams
Orr
Russell
Brady

but other than Brady most people never saw the others

even teams ?

schmdit Shore Bucyk Bourque Esposito….how many saw these guys other then Ray but his rookie year was 1979

Bergeron should not be getting a pay cut

If McAvoy getting 9 M then a Bergeron should get same on 1 year but we know won’t happen

Best guess 2/15

I don't see him taking more on his next contract than he's making now. Historically he's never been about getting every last dollar possible.

Also, age 37 is not typically when guys get a pay increase in this league. Even if he does deserve it.

Bergeron's contribtions to Bruins culture and influence on the younger/incoming players is immeasurable.

If Bergeron ends up following the path of Jean Ratelle in both longevity and productivity, the Bruins will do very well.

Still has an outside shot at 500/1200 if he plays long enough and still flourishes for another 3-4 years. He may not get there but i think he'll make it pretty damn interesting, especially if he has Recchi-esque post 40 year old run.

Bergeron is 4th all time for Bruins centres
Esposito
Schmidt
Cowley
Bergeron

In terms of all time Bruins players, Bergeron is around 10th.

Orr, Shore, Bourque Esposito, Schmidt, Brimsek, Cowley, Clapper,

Guys like Chara and Park were better than Bergeron, but if we talk about in a Bruins Jersey, that's a more difficult discussion.

So this group is probably Chara, Park, Bergeron, Thompson, and Buyck fighting for 9-13 spots.

I'd find a spot in that final group for Rick Middleton & Cam Neely.
