At his current pace he'll hit 730 before his 35th birthday.
How likely will he keep that pace? :shakehead

Gretzky was over 700 at age 31 and played 8 more years to end up at 894. And this was in a time where scoring was far easier.

Anyone who thinks Ovechkin can score another 360 NHL goals in his 30's needs a doctor, zero with a big 0 chance of that happening.

He is declining already

He just scored 50 goals.

How likely will he keep that pace? :shakehead

Ovechkin is not Gretzky. Ovechkin relies on his size and shot which are not going to go away.

I didn't say he would definitely do it, but he clearly has a shot.

Anyone who thinks Ovechkin couldn't possibly score 360 goals in 10 years is the one who needs a doctor.

Happy Birthday Ovie. 31 today. As to how many goals he ends up with in his career; I think he ends up in the high 700's.

This is all hypothetical, but let's say he averages 47 goals per season for the next 4 seasons. That puts him at 713, or about 181 short at age 35. I think it's still possible for him to make a run at it, as long as he stays healthy, there are no further lockout(s), or doesn't decide to go play in the K.

Providing he is able to average what I had mentioned, he would need to do the following to break Gretzky's 894 after he turns 35:

90.5 goals per season for the next two seasons
60.3 goals per season for the next three seasons
45.25 goals per season for the next four seasons
36.5 goals per season for the next five seasons
30.3 goals per season for the next six seasons
25.2 goals per season for the next seven seasons

I don't think it's as far out of reach as some can think. I can see him making a serious run at it when he's 40-41.

I do think Ovechkin will hit 800, which may be even more impressive than Gretzky's goal totals considering the era he is playing in.

He likely will hit 800, and I do hope he passes 894. Even if he doesn't 700 or more in this era = greatest goal scorer of all time easily if he isn't already.

It'll be tough buy not that outrageous. Iginla is a clear tier down and so far has 237 goals from age 31-38 in the same era. He should probably put up another 20 this year. And maybe another 15-20 if he plays the following season. Could Ovechkin score 85-90 more goals than 31+ Iginla over 9-10 seasons? Maybe. Though who knows if he wants to stay in the NHL that long
