No, you can't. But when a player of JT's stature tells you he'll sign for 11x7 you do that and worry about everything else later.

In TOR's case, specifically, I believe their downfall in cap management didn't come from JT signing. It was not locking up Matthews/Marner last summer that has/will hurt them more.

I'm pretty sure they talked with Marner and tried to lowball him then. Marner's camp has been on record that they'd sign at 9.5M AAV last off-season.

What a deal that would've been for the Leafs. Instead they gambled against their home-grown talented player and lost big time.
