Can't remember a time where a guy was rumored to be signed/signing for awhile like this with no official news.

Didn't want to announce signing till after Pionk decided. Thought Pionk might pass if there were more defenseman ahead of him in the system.

I thought of this, but also thought of it from the Kings' standpoint. The Kings can only have so many under contract and wanted Pionk, then Frantenberg in that order.
They pursued both, obviously. They first got Fantenberg to agree in terms, but did not officially sign him, waiting for Pionk's decision. I wonder if they landed Pionk, that they would have not signed Fantenberg. And this leak came out that Fantenberg had signed, where he may not have been actually signed and just appeared close to signing.
