With Gonchar, Markov, Weaver, Allen and Gilbert, do we have the oldest D core in NHL ? If not, what team has the oldest D ?
The slowest too ? Emelin is average in terms of speed, and PK is above average.

Definitely oldest. Gonchar is the oldest defenceman, Markov is probably top-10 in terms of age.

We're probably the slowest too, but it's okay if the players can adjust their game.

Very interesting observation.

Now... let's hear some controversial opinions. Is that a good or bad thing ?

Price is happy about it, less stupid mistakes in front of him.

It doesn't mean anything to me. If they can play, I don't care if they are 50.

The only concern for a team trending on the old side is to have something in the pipeline. That's not an issue for the habs.

So far so good.

My only concern is come playoff time. We already know Markov tends to slow down quite a bit by then. Will it be the same for Gonchar, Gilbert, Allen and Weaver this year?

If so, we might be in trouble.

Then you can bring in tinordi or beaulieu if it gets to that point. That's the beauty of the depth.

I mean, you can bring them in for the expiring contracts. The team needs Markov to have success.

We will definitely be in trouble if the next 61 games are a copy-paste of the last few. Leaning on the vets and holding back the rookies is a recipe that leaves the old guys overcooked and the young guys too raw.

How can you bring in Tinordi and Beaulieu in for the playoffs if they've spent half the year in Hamilton or on the bench?

What other choice do you have if your vets have lost all effectiveness? Might as well get your young guys in some nhl action at that point.

If you're going to have to bring down Beaulieu and Tinordi later on, they should be getting more NHL ice time now... Obviously you'd rather have the growing pains in the regular season and not in the playoffs :\

This may blow everyone's minds, but this team is (I believe currently) the oldest, shortest, and lightest it has been on average over the past 5 years. I think we can see a few people on defense tipping the average, lol.

(if this doesn't work, it's gonna be messy, 'cause I can't edit)

AVERAGE HEIGHT, WEIGHT, AGE PER SEASON
Season Roster Link Average Height Average Weight Average Age
2014- 2015 View roster 183.65 cm | 6.00 ft 91.17 kg | 201 lbs 28.04 yrs
2013- 2014 View roster 183.40 cm | 6.00 ft 91.60 kg | 202 lbs 27.80 yrs
2012- 2013 View roster 183.10 cm | 6.00 ft 91.47 kg | 202 lbs 27.17 yrs

you're delusional if you think Allen, Weaver, Gilbert and Gonchar will stick with the team. They will be traded for Kris Letang sometimes in march.

PK and Markov's ice time have decreased since the addition of Gonchar. Allen's addition will likely give more flexibility to managing the ice time for all the D.

PK got called up in the playoffs

Based on MB's comments before the season, it appeared that the organization was ready to experience those growing pains this year.

Obviously, something has changed between now and then. Maybe they just aren't quite where the organization expected them to be at this point. Or maybe the expectations changed based on where the team stands at this point of the season... Maybe a combination of both.

Either way, there haven't been any major injuries on D this season, and that is likely to change. I feel more confident being able to call up tinordi or beaulieu than the pateryns or nygrens.
