They may want the contract slot or possibly open a spot for someone on their AHL team. There is more to buyouts than simply cap relief.

That’s definitely it oilers have a lot of young D who need playing time in the AHL.

I thought so too, but I looked on Monday and found out that last year first buyout was June 23rd, next one was 27th.

7 of the 11 buyouts last year came July 1st.

It actually makes a lot of sense.

- Too many contract spots
- No room in the minors for him (too many D prospects and too few veteran slots available)
- No trade value (desperation that someone might claim him)
- Negligible effect to team cap hit

Really, it just comes down to the Oilers paying him to sit at home and burning a contract, or buying him and opening up a contract spot and letting him see if he can get a job elsewhere (Europe most likely).

I actually thought that he was a decent bottom paring, better than what we have right now, that's for sure

Just seems like burning money (& cap-space) to me, one veteran guy on the AHL team isn't a bad thing and as long as he's buried he isn't hurting out cap space like he will be when bought out.
