IMO the Oilers really fumbled their cap space this summer.

it was clear they needed/wanted a goalie.

Markstrom and others rejected them. Fair.

but then used that 3 mil cap space on Barrie who is at this point nothing but a PP specialist. Horrendous 5 on 5. Oilers already had a historic Pp and ranked 1st last year. Redundant.

they should have weaponized that cap space and used it and traded for a goalie like Raanta.

Internally Bouchard could fill Barrie’s roles. It wouldn’t even be that much of a downgrade.
Meh, if we did, now we’d have no Barrie and no Klefbom. I think Barrie has been decent. Holland left that weakness and a little bad luck has torched him for it. But I’m of the opinion that the oil should keep throwin darts at the goalie-dartboard until you catch a dark horse. Goalies are too fickle for me.

Assuming the deal would be in the ballpark of Smith and a 3rd? Maybe another later pick.

3rd is gone this year because of the James Neal trade.

He magically passed that 21 goal threshold despite being injured at the time and only having 19 goals goals last season.

The NHLs crystal ball said so, thus the 3rd is the Flames this year because reasons.

Why would AZ have any interest in taking Smith back? I wouldn't trade air for Smith and a third.
Because both teams need to carry three goalies and Edmonton needs to send some salary back the other way. From Edmonton's perspective, Raanta's injury history makes spending any more than a 3rd a pretty significant risk.

Well, keep your third and take the risk-free Smith... I'd rather keep Raanta and roll the dice than take Smith back and pay him. Especially for a third.

Just a rough estimate at the acquisition cost. It doesn't have to be this year's pick. Just throwing it out there.

I don't see any reasonable prospects being of interest, nor do I see a ton of value in acquiring an oft injured rental goalie.

An reliable when healthy, but oft injured goalie making money on a team that both needs to clear cap and acquire picks... he's worth a 3rd on the high end, a 5th and roster spot on the low end.

AZ is under the cap, and they can move Hossa to LTIR if they want to make more space. I don't see any urgency to moving Raanta. He's an exceptional goalie. They have another exceptional goalie that is healthy more often, but everyone wants a deep bench this year.

Exceptional isn’t the adjective that I’d use to describe Raanta.

He is decent, but far from exceptional.

Came into the season with a number one save% (92.3%) over the past five years in goalies with over 40 games played. Number 3 over the same period for GAA.

He definitely has durability concerns, but he's obviously better than a "decent" goalie when he's playing.

Yeah when healthy Raanta has been really good, the #s reflect that

If he had been healthy his whole time in Arizona, his reputation would be a lot more significant league-wide

And he's only owed less than $2M real cash the rest of the season. No need to move him just to save money or cap. It'd be pointless. A third doesn't have more value than having him on the bench and rolling the dice. Nevermind the joy of paying Smith on top of it.

No interest in inviting Mike Smith back into the Arizona locker room.
Especially when he's also "oft-injured" and makes only $500k less cash than Raanta this season. It's a bizarre suggestion.

Since his acquisition by the Arizona Coyotes over three seasons ago there isn't a goaltender in the entire NHL with a better Save Percentage (w/ >20gp). There are only 5 with a better Goals Against Average (w/ >40gp).

You may want to reconsider your adjective assessment. In most statistics that matter, Raanta is exceedingly exceptional. Absolutely elite, in fact.

Unfortunately, there's another statistic that stands out for him; games played. This is the great equalizer. He's really, really bad in that area. His injury luck is just awful.

at least we only signed Barrie for 1 year. Usually we make these moves but have the guys for 4-5 years

Raanta would easily be the better goalie than Koskinen. He's just injury prone.

Larsson for Raanta would make a lot of sense, with a taxi squad goalie going back to AZ and a taxi squad defenseman going back to Edmonton.

That doesn't help the Coyotes. Larsson is one of the worst on Edmonton's defense and thats saying something. Back ups are gonna be pretty important in this condensed season. I don't think they even consider it unless there's a 2nd attached, even then Larsson is bad.

How does it not help them? OEL is out for a month, when he returns, they have a great top 6 of Chychrun - Demers, OEL - Larsson, Goligoski - Hjalmarsson

EDIT: I forgot about Demers so maybe it doesn't make as much sense as I thought.
