People should keep in mind that just because a player---say Girardi is left unprotected---it doesn't mean that he's going to be picked. I suspect that no more than two players will be lost per team in an expansion draft. That would set each of the two new teams up with 30 players each and they'd round out their rosters more or less with free agent signings.

And in past expansions when a player was chosen from a team that team got to protect another player.

Buying out players makes it harder to sign big dollar UFA's. You start every year with a cap handicap. The Rangers almost always set aside a couple million to bring in 4th liners or spare defensemen UFA free agents. Always using up their cap space---buying out players would hurt team depth---force them to go cheaper for free agents or put guys like Megna, Gibbons or Adam in our regular rotation.

I really don't think the Rangers are going to buy out Girardi--at least not until the last year or two of his deal. I think if they decide to get rid of him---they'll expose him to the expansion draft (if they can) and failing that try their damnedest to trade him.

Yes, they've said that teams can't lose more than 1 player per expansion team. So if there is 1 expansion team, the Rangers can lose at most 1 player. If there are 2 expansion teams, the Rangers can lose at most 2 players.

The important thing though, whether or not Girardi is taken, is being able to protect someone more important, and being able to have Girardi's cap hit go toward the total that has to be exposed.

I think the Rangers try to deal Nash and Staal this off-season and hold on to Girardi and expose him to the expansion draft (if eligible). If no one Claims him I think he gets bought out summer 2017. Less cap hit for less years.

Assuming none of the main core are dealt this summer, they would protect Zucc, Brassard, Stepan, Kreider, Hayes Miller and Fast up front. McD Yandle (if resigned) and Klein on D. Lundqvist in net.

Assuming it's 2 years NHL and not 2 years pro experience Buch, Lindberg, Skjei and McI would be protected.

Of course this will change depending on what the Rangers get in return for Nash and Staal as well as what unrestricted free agents they sign (and for how long) this summer.

What interesting is there was no mention of a minimum amount,of salary that had to be exposed. The article said there were some changes to the original plan the NHL had after the negotiations with the NHLPA. I wonder if that was one of the things taken out.

Edit: Girardi's buyout would be $1.11 million for 6 years of bought out next summer ( amount owed would be $10 million on the remaining 3 years).

Will the Rangers be an upper limit team next season? If they ice a considerably younger team next season,they won't be pressing up against the cap. The smaller the payroll for next season,the less money they need to expose. They should keep Girardi and expose him. The team is not going to be a contender next season. Dave Maloney said the Rangers need to add young skill players. Trade contacts for draft picks. Trade contracts for 2nd contracts. That's been the theme all week. Significant amount of change.

The new expansion teams will scout every team in the league. They will want a mix. They will want at least some experienced guys and maybe Girardi if he's available will be one but they're going take younger players and guys on the cusp of making it. I suspect they will look at salaries--bang for the buck. They'll need to get to the cap floor on the one hand but if they think someone is a bad value they're more than likely to pass----though they might also make deals--'we'll help you out and take this guy (at the expansion draft) if you'll remember us later'. So if Gorton really wants to get rid of Girardi---the team that takes him might get something else from the Rangers some time later.

Im guessing we will see quite a few more NMCs signed by UFAs in July.

It may become a negotiation point for the agents because the teams who don't want to give FA's the NMC can basically turn around and dump the big contract by exposing them to the expansion draft - depending on the contract rules.


We'll have to see the rules regarding who can and cannot be protected, but its possible we could see some teams get creative on July 1st with the risky intention of taking advantage of the expansion draft by taking on 1-year "UFA rentals" with the hopes of them being claimed in the draft.

Then again if its such a bad cap hit the expansion team won't want it. Depends on the player I guess.
